Title and Number of Position: Chemist     LA009 Application Period: 6/3/2026 – 6/10/2026 Salary Range: Grade U7 / $31.43 - $41.20 Starting Salary $31.41 Division – Section – Unit: Environmental Science & Compliance / Laboratory Shift and Days: 7:00 AM – 2:30 PM Monday - Friday Location: Providence Restrictions: None Position Covered by Bargaining Unit Agreement: Yes Name of Bargaining Unit: Council 94, Local 1010 DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: The Chemist is responsible for performing a variety of professional chemistry tests and analyses and preparing appropriate reports.  Analyzes and tests samples requiring professional chemistry principles and practices for EPA compliance and NBC standards. Selects the appropriate method to prepare samples for testing, such as digestion, filtration, or dilution. Prepares and reports test results. Calibrates, cleans, and maintains professional chemistry equipment. Prepares a variety of reports, documents, and records that are required for regulatory reporting. Maintains a clean, safe, and operationally sound lab environment. Assists with overseeing the operations of the lab and quality control and writing standard operating procedures. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry and two years of chemical lab experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Professional chemistry principles and practices; Applicable safety principles and practices; Applicable laws, rules, and regulations; Lab procedures; Applicable chemistry and general lab equipment. Performing professional chemistry tests. Analyzing chemistry results.  Developing related reports. Operating a computer and applicable software applications.  Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive directions.
