    "description": "<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Contract Policing Program - Temporary Constable</span></p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>In the heart of our communities, neighbours still greet each other on the street, and the sense of connection runs deep.  While Victoria and the Island may feel small, it is rooted in a rich history and a spirit of resilience and innovation.  It’s a place where you can feel at home, while still being part of something bigger.  Vancouver Island is calling you…</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>Have you reached retirement – or have you recently retired – but you aren’t quite ready to hang up your duty belt?  Perhaps you’re a former VicPD member who wants to return, or a seasoned officer looking to begin a new chapter in a community that values collaboration, innovation, and upstream approaches to public safety.  The Victoria Police Department (VicPD) is welcoming a limited number of experienced officers to join our team as contract employees.  This is your opportunity to bring your experience and leadership home – or to Vancouver Island for the first time — and help shape the future of policing in British Columbia’s capital city.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Why Choose VicPD</span></p>\n<p>At VicPD, we are embracing a new era of policing – one that focuses on partnerships, prevention, and proactive solutions.  We are seeking seasoned officers who want to be part of this shift by:</p>\n<p> </p>\n<ul>\n<li>Collaborating across sectors to address the root causes of crime and enhance community well-being.</li>\n<li>Partnering with health, social service, and Indigenous leaders to advance upstream approaches to public safety.</li>\n<li>Leading with integrity, compassion, and innovation to meet today’s complex challenges.</li>\n</ul>\n<p> </p>\n<p>This is more than extending a career in policing – it’s about shaping the future of community safety in one of Canada’s most beautiful and dynamic regions.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Position Description:</span></p>\n<p>All Temporary Constables will be assigned to the Patrol Division.  Temporary Constables are employed for a fixed term of up to three years and play a key role in maintaining public safety and supporting the operational needs of the department.  These positions are intended to supplement regular staffing levels during periods of recruitment and transition.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<ul>\n<li>Uniform position (Patrol)</li>\n<li>Work rotational shifts</li>\n<li>High visibility, community-focused enforcement of Criminal Code, Federal and Provincial Statutes, and Municipal Bylaws</li>\n<li>Conduct patrols on foot or by vehicle, liaising with diverse community members and partner agencies</li>\n<li>Work collaboratively with other VicPD teams to address operational priorities and enhance public safety</li>\n<li>Communicate effectively and demonstrate strong de-escalation and problem-solving skills</li>\n<li>Use proportional and lawful force as required, in accordance with VicPD Policy, the Criminal Code, and the National Use of Force Framework</li>\n<li>Assist with traffic control, bylaw enforcement, and special events as required</li>\n<li>Support investigations, sudden death responses, and public safety operations under the direction of supervisory staff</li>\n<li>Maintain all operational certifications and qualifications required under Department Policy and Provincial Policing Standards</li>\n</ul>\n<p> </p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Terms of Employment:<br></span>Duration:  Up to three (3) years (temporary, full-time preferred; part-time may be considered)<br><br></p>\n<p>Compensation:  115% of the First-Class Constable hourly rate (20th-year Constable rate), plus 14.67% in lieu of pension contributions.  Total compensation approximately $160,000/annually<br><br></p>\n<p>Benefits and Entitlements:  Extended health, dental, medical services plan, group life and AD&amp;D, public holidays, bereavement leave, and WorkSafe coverage (excluding “Schedule B” top-up provisions)</p>\n<ul>\n<li>Annual Leave:  200 hours per year, no carryover</li>\n<li>Sick Leave:  96 hours per year, no carryover</li>\n</ul>\n<p> </p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Qualifications, Skills and Requirements:</span></p>\n<ul>\n<li>Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada</li>\n<li>Graduate of a recognized Canadian Police Academy (i.e., certified constable in good standing or recently retired)</li>\n<li>Recent operational policing experience (within 36 months of retirement)</li>\n<li>Satisfaction of the physical and psychological health screening process, specific to the occupational requirements of the role</li>\n<li>Possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence (or equivalent from another province)</li>\n<li>Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and within a team</li>\n<li>Proven communication and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to interact respectfully with diverse community members</li>\n<li>Demonstrated judgment, integrity, and professionalism in the performance of police duties</li>\n<li>Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with vulnerable and high-risk populations</li>\n</ul>\n<p> </p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Restrictions:  </span></p>\n<p>Temporary Constables are not eligible for LTD benefits, patrol premium pay, to apply for promotion, transfers, specialty positions, or secondments.</p>",
