Andover Bread Loaf Lawrence Student Writers Director
June 23- July 17, 2026
Orientation: Tuesday, June 23 rd & Wednesday, June 24 th 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Staff schedule: Monday – Friday from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm
About the Program
Andover Bread Loaf (ABL) reimagines education based on a pedagogy of care that, through writing and the arts, ignites change in youth, adults, and educators by providing the space, trust, and freedom for them to develop their intellectual, leadership, and collaborative skills. Using these tools, they can transform themselves and their communities while working toward social justice.
Lawrence Student Writers Workshop (LSWW) is a three-week intensive summer writing and arts program for students in grades 8-12, hosted at Phillips Academy. Student programming is held daily, Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 2 pm.
About the Role
LSWW Directors are expected to lead the overall planning for the Lawrence Student Writers Workshop including but not limited to; developing the day-to-day program schedule so that LSWW participants and Writing Leaders (WLs) have a transformative and fun experience, facilitate daily team meetings and reflection sessions with WLs, and meet with other directors to refine, adjust, and respond to WLs and participant needs within the programming hours, ensuring that WLs and participants are grounded in the purpose and values of ABL in the process of creating and learning together. Please note that Directors must facilitate staff orientation for LSWW WLs on Thursday, June 25 and Friday, June 26, 2026, prior to the start of programming.
Minimum Job Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience with programming that supports affinity and diverse youth spaces and communities is strongly preferred. Minimum of three years’ professional experience; relevant experience includes working with multilingual communities, youth development, or after school enrichment. Transferable skills are enthusiastically welcome. A commitment to culturally responsive practices and a demonstrated ability to incorporate and engage diverse perspectives across all aspects of the work. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with strong attention to detail and lead independent projects. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders including parents, board members, and community partners. Self-starter who can work both independently and collaboratively and brings forth an asset-based approach to programming.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
Passionate about creative writing, working with young writers, and developing Writing Leaders. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Google Workspace apps, as well as basic computer and AV (Audio Visual) skills. Ability to physically set up and break down all learning and program spaces that align with pedagogical practices in collaboration with directors. Proven ability to plan and execute programs and events and manage communication and coordination between multiple vendors and contracted partnerships. Candidates with extensive knowledge of the cultural and social dynamics of Lawrence, MA preferred. Valid driver’s license preferred.
Responsibilities and Duties
Attend pre-program meetings, orientations, and plan the final reading showcases for parents and community partners. Directors collaboratively build and prepare logistical and programmatic details such as scheduling guest artists, coordinating fun group activities, and collaborating with other ABL collective partners such as Rising Loaves and Slice. Supervise and document participant and Writing Leader needs and observations; Ensuring the socio-emotional care and physical safety of all staff and participants throughout the day, including during workshop times, meals, and recreational activities. Review and coordinate Writing Leader staff training and make any appropriate updates to procedures and toolkits. Maintain clear communication with campus offices, staff, participants, and parents regarding the program, activities, and any pertinent issues. Cultivate a nurturing and positive environment that emphasizes collaboration and upholds ABL values while building community amongst staff and participants. Provide opportunities for Writing Leaders to learn and practice leadership, decision making, and teamwork. Oversee production of yearly anthology; Guiding participants and Writing Leaders through the editing, design, and publishing process to produce the final product. Gather and reflect on participant and Writing Leaders end of program surveys.
