Port Room Nurses are clinical experts in vascular access who specialize in the assessment and placement of appropriate IV catheters. These nurses provide patient education on catheter placement, use, and ongoing maintenance—both in the clinical setting and for those discharged with an accessed port or PICC line for infusion. They also perform device maintenance, including dressing changes, flushing, and troubleshooting, while educating patients and staff on proper line care and infection prevention. Nursing skills gained: Advanced vascular access skills Expert IV and port placement Catheter care and maintenance Patient education on line use Infection-prevention best practices Unit Successes/Designations/National recognition: Commission on Cancer Care- COC accreditation. Magnet Status NCI Designated (National Cancer Institute) QOPI certified (Quality Oncology Practice Initiatives) Outstanding patient experience scores Unit Culture Highlights: Fosters an environment for learning and professional development Support from team members in the form of precepting and mentoring Qualifications: Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
