Charles Wright Academy (CWA) is a co-educational, non-religious, independent school located in University Place, WA. Charles Wright Academy is located on a beautiful, green, and sprawling 107-acre campus that includes athletic fields and more than 60 acres of gorgeous Pacific Northwest forests that also serve as an extension of our proper academic campus. Our educational philosophy of experiential learning includes unique daily opportunities for wilderness exploration, hiking, birding, wildlife observations, gardening, nature habitat sketch subjects for art studies, local biological science exploration, conservation work, farming, and more.
The only completely co-educational, independent, and non-religious school serving students in preschool through grade 12 in the South Sound area, CWA provides a challenging and nurturing environment with college preparatory academics and robust programming that prepare students to thrive and successfully launch into college and beyond. A wide array of experiential education, artistic, athletic, travel, and service opportunities promote students’ social-emotional development and provide students avenues to discover and pursue their passions. Summary:
All full-time faculty positions are filled for the 2025 – 2026 school year. Although we do not have an immediate need, we are currently accepting applications for substitute teachers for all grade levels, and especially those with experience in Spanish, French, and Japanese languages, performing arts, science, and math. We are also in high need of substitute teachers that are Merit Certified to work with our 3 & 4-year-old program. Substitute Teaching offers a flexible schedule and is an excellent way to work with great students and their families while achieving a work/life balance customized for you, stay active in your field, or experience independent school teaching.
Responsibilities:
Successfully executed the substitute plans and schedule of the assignment. Impart enthusiasm for learning to students and inspire students to participate fully in the learning process. Provides and maintains a stimulating, healthy and safe classroom environment. Practice thoughtful, respectful, and effective classroom management techniques, which support active learning and promote positive student behavior for all students. Communicate in a professional and timely manner with colleagues, and administration. Represent Charles Wright Academy in a positive manner with all constituencies. Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have earned a bachelor’s degree and have previous teaching experience. Although a Washington State teaching certificate is not required, those applicants with a teaching certificate will be given preference. Essential elements for the position include the ability to inspire children, the capacity to work cooperatively with peers, and a joyful sense of humor.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift 40 lbs. Must be able to walk long distances and up hilly terrain. Must be able to move easily around a classroom, accessing materials and assisting children as needed. Must be able to communicate and exchange information with children, other teachers, and families with appropriately sensitive and accurate communication skills. Salary/Benefits:
This position is an hourly, non-benefited position except for sick leave accrual per current Washington State guidelines.
