Description
The PET/CT Technologist prepares and administers high energy short acting radio-isotopes, and sometimes contrast media, supplied by manufacturers, to patients in preparation for diagnostic procedures. The technologist prepares and positions patients for scanning and operates the PET scanner, CT scanner, Dose calibrators, radiation detectors, and radiopharmaceutical tracking software. The technologist is responsible for performing radiation safety and quality control procedures, disposal of radioactive materials, and monitoring work area and patient rooms to ensure that the levels of radioactive materials are in accordance with NRC regulations. May be required to work in other modalities with appropriate licensure.
Responsibilities
TECHNICAL TASKS
Exhibits working knowledge of the Positron emission tomography (PET) camera, Computed Tomography (CT) scanner, dose calibrator, radiation detector, radiopharmaceutical tracking software, infusion system, and PET/CT procedures. Administers contrast agents, when needed, under guidance and approval of site Pharmacy.
Performs ordered examinations of appropriate anatomical regions in accordance with accepted standards of practice and protocols of the interpreting Radiologist. Refers to physician's orders/chart or referring area for any special instructions that may be indicated. Corroborates clinical history with procedure ordered.
Administers high energy short acting radio-isotopes, using advanced ALARA concepts, and following NRC and state policies and guidelines. Calculates, measures, and records radiopharmaceutical dosages received, used, and disposed of using computer software.
Reviews/explains the procedure and safety precautions to the patient to facilitate cooperation and alleviate patient anxiety. Completes and signs the consent forms. Maintains patient confidentiality.
Routinely questions the patient before procedure to obtain patient's history. Ask all females of child bearing age if they may be pregnant. Complete and signs the Patient Screening form. Documents all pertinent information, i.e., history, tech initials, exception codes, etc., appropriately.
Prepares films for interpretation including pulling all previous films and providing completed work sheets.
Always demonstrates an awareness of radiation safety procedures for self and patient; wears protective clothing when necessary; wears film badge at all times.
Maintains a clean and neat work environment, keeping areas stocked at all times.
Performs equipment quality checks and troubleshoots problems. Ensure all equipment is maintained and serviced when indicated. Calls for service and notifies all pertinent team members.
Orders all PET/CT supplies as needed. Maintains inventory, makes every attempt to control supply costs.
Cooperates with facility healthcare professionals and complies with facility policies/procedures to maintain occupational radiation exposures ALARA.
Maintains technical competency through continued education as required by accrediting and licensing bodies. Has completed required competencies for equipment and procedures in PET CT.
Maintains department compliance with regulatory agencies and/or credentials as appropriate.

Always obtains information necessary for successful completion of duties; regularly confers with radiologist; asks for assistance with patients who present difficulties
Demonstrates the ability to perform work in an accurate and timely manner and prioritizes procedures in periods of crisis and/or emergent situations. Strives to complete all scans as they are requested/scheduled during the shift.
Performs all scans in an efficient and timely manner without compromising quality
Organizes daily workload so that patient exams are completed on time. Coordinates Nuclear Medicine schedule with other areas to prevent patient waiting between exams. Example: Ultrasound, Diagnostic, etc.
Acts appropriately as Deputy Radiation Safety Officer in the absence of Radiation Safety Officer
Other duties as assigned
May be required to work in x-ray and nuclear medicine with appropriate licensure, and as time permits.
Qualifications
Experience - Three years' experience in Nuclear Medicine One year experience in PET CT
Education - Graduate of an AMA accredited school for Nuclear Medicine Technology and Radiographic Technology
Training - With no prior experience, the tech must complete one year of training exclusively in PET CT and complete all required PET CT competencies.
Special Skills - Can also perform x-ray exams.
Licensure - CNMT; ARRT; LSRT; BLS Certification

"ShortDescriptionStr": "The PET/CT Technologist prepares and administers high energy short acting radio-isotopes, and sometimes contrast media, supplied by manufacturers, to patients in preparation for diagnostic procedures. The technologist prepares and positions patients for scanning and operates the PET scanner, CT scanner, Dose calibrators, radiation detectors, and radiopharmaceutical tracking software. The technologist is responsible for performing radiation safety and quality control procedures, disposal of radioactive materials, and monitoring work area and patient rooms to ensure that the levels of radioactive materials are in accordance with NRC regulations. May be required to work in other modalities with appropriate licensure. ",
