Note: This announcement is to fill a current part-time (40 hours a week, 10 months during the Arlington Public Schools' calendar year) vacancy. However, this recruitment may be used to fill future vacant positions including full-time, part-time, bilingual (Spanish), and non-bilingual.
Arlington County's Department of Human Services (DHS) Public Health Division is hiring a part-time School Health Aide (SHA) in the School Health Bureau . This employee provides first aid, emergency care, and clerical services in a school clinic at one of the Arlington Public Schools. The School Health Aide works as a member of a public health team providing services for a diverse population in the school and community.
Arlington County DHS is committed to delivering client services in an effective, equitable, respectful, and trauma-informed manner. Our staff is dedicated to ensuring our clients are approached, engaged and cared for in ways that demonstrate competency, sensitivity and awareness of factors which impact the client experience including but not limited to: cultural identity, gender, racial, and ethnic diversity, religious/spiritual ascription, physical capability, cognitive and literacy levels, sexual orientation, and linguistic needs.
Responsibilities
Specific duties include:
Providing health care for clients to include administering first aid to sick and injured children, administering medications as authorized, testing students’ hearing and vision, and responding to medical emergencies at the school in a manner that demonstrates Arlington County principles of government;
Contributing to the overall objectives of the Bureau and overall organizational mission, goals and objectives.
Serving as the primary mentor for the SHA orientation program and providing additional support to SHAs as needed;
Researching, proposing, and providing training to the SHAs under the supervision of a PHN/PHN Nursing Supervisor;
Serving as technology SuperUser and trainer by providing guidance on the use of Synergy, WebVision, VIIS, Excel, Inventory Access program, and other SHA technology programs;
Working with PHN Coordinator and Lead Supervisor to provide technology and other support for in-school immunizations;
Working with School Health Inventory technician to identify supply ordering issues/needs;
Referring students to medical providers and following-up on immunizations, physicals, eye doctors, audiologists, etc; Maintaining confidential medical records, including both paper-based and electronic records; Communicating with parents, the public health nurse, and school staff on matters affecting the health of students; Attending all-staff presentations, team meetings and other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have the following: a strong understanding of School Health policies and procedures; strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with both the school community (students, parents, and staff); and proven leadership skills. The ideal candidate will also possess strong technology skills.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent; plus Some experience providing direct human services in a health care setting (e.g. taking vital signs, setting up and restocking exam rooms, assisting nurses and clinicians to ensure a smooth clinic flow, providing support to the different clinic coordinators by preparing medical records and performing other post clinic follow up activities); and Current valid certifications in CPR and BLS (Basic Life Support) for Healthcare Providers, or ability to obtain prior to start date.
Please note: Bilingual proficiency is desired: English/Spanish may be required for future bilingual vacancies.
Substitution: Satisfactory completion of college coursework in a human services-related field may be substituted for related work experience on a year for year basis.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
Working in a school health clinic; Providing assistance in a clinical setting; Working in school organizations, civic groups, or volunteer service groups; Clerical experience in records maintenance; and/or Working with children. Special Requirements:
Applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent on a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
A pre-employment criminal records check as well as a State of Virginia Central Registry check will be conducted.
A valid certification in CPR/Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers or the ability to obtain such certifications prior to start date.
The selected candidate will be required to submit to a tuberculosis skin test (also known as the tuberculin or PPD test) or tuberculosis blood test (also known as an IGRA).
For Volunteer experience to be considered as relevant work experience, please indicate hours worked per week, start/end dates, work performed, and name of organization/employer.
If substituting college coursework for the experience requirement, the human services related discipline (major course of study) AND the number of semester or quarter hours completed must be clearly indicated in the application form.
An assessment of oral Spanish proficiency would be required before a candidate can be appointed to a bilingual position. The incumbent in the position would receive the language pay premium on all hours worked and on paid leave hours.

Work hours: Monday through Friday during normal school hours. Hours may vary slightly depending upon program and school assigned. This is a part-time position for 40 hours a week and 10 months a year. Selected candidate must be prepared to begin immediately.
Work location: School Health offices are located at 2110 Washington Blvd., Arlington, VA. Employee will be assigned to a public school or program in Arlington based on program needs.
Benefits: Part-time permanent employees are eligible for County benefits, including health insurance, on a pro-rated basis. The salary listed above is effective July 1, 2026.
