It is a popular tourism destination featuring Lake Michigan beaches (like Silver Beach), renowned fishing at Shamrock Park, and various outdoor activities such as hiking and cross-country skiing at Love Creek County Park.  As of the 2020 Census, the population was 154,316. About the Job Under the general supervision of the Road Department Director, the Engineering Supervisor provides supervision of the design and engineering required for the Berrien County Road system. Responsible for the design, engineering and construction of roads in accordance with accepted engineering principles, standards, and practices. Monitors contractors performing work for the Road Department on Federal, State and Local Projects. Supervises staff assigned to the engineering section of the Road Department. Typical Duties Serves as designated project engineer on selected local, state, and federally funded projects. Applies a thorough knowledge of current principles and practices of engineering. Works on multiple projects at a time. Responsible for road engineering projects done under township project program. Responsible for the field survey, preliminary design, cost estimates, final design, construction drawings, specifications, and right of way acquisition in accordance with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Guidelines and the Michigan Department of Transportation Guidelines for road, bridge, culvert, and storm sewer projects. Responsible for performance and documentation of construction engineering in accordance with the Michigan Department of Transportation Standard Specifications for Construction Manual; including inspection, material sampling, and testing of aggregate, bituminous and concrete materials and density testing. Plans, schedules and coordinates the preparation of documents or activities for multiple work projects on roads for the Road Department. Supervises and trains the Engineering Department staff, to include hiring and evaluating staff performance. Recommend disciplinary action as necessary. Recommend and reviews techniques for prevention of soil erosion and sedimentation control. Meets with the public and other officials and apply knowledge and expertise acquired through experience to answer and resolve project complaints and requests on roads in a professional manner. Performs QA/QC reviews of engineering projects. Manages consultants and other vendors to ensure they execute their roles on engineering projects. Maximum allowable spending authority is $5,000.00. Reviews operational procedures to ensure compliance with applicable policies and performance measures. Oversees and directs the survey, design and construction of County culverts and bridges, drainage structures, including preliminary cost estimates, preliminary design, right of way acquisition, final design, project specifications, bidding documents, construction inspection, pay estimates, material testing and project documentation. Continuously evaluates and reports on the condition of bridges and culverts, recommending projects for maintenance, repair, reconstruction or replacement. Oversees biannual bridge and culvert inspections. Continuously reviews new and improved materials, equipment and construction techniques in order to secure better and/or more economical results in the design, inspection and construction of County infrastructure. Represents the Road Department and maintains liaison role with individuals and related road organizations. About You Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Progressive history of responsibility at a firm or state and local government agency working in the area of transportation related to road systems. Hold a Professional Engineering License thru the state of Michigan or a state recognized by Michigan. Ability to become a certified storm water management construction site operator.
