Description

Department Overview This position functions in the Department of Interventional Radiology as an integral member of our team approach to patient care. The Interventional Radiology Technologist, in collaboration with physicians and nurses, strives to provide high quality care to every patient coming through the unit. Daily assignments vary due to the range of procedures that may be completed from central line placements to embolizations and strokes. The patient population varies from neonates to geriatrics adding another unique layer to the care provided in the unit. This position rotates between the dual locations of IR which include the South Waterfront/ CHH2 as well as the 11A unit of the main OHSU Hospital building with call requirements. The IR Technologist provides direct patient care using medical imaging techniques to help the Interventionalist in diagnosis and/or treatment. Provides assistance with radiographic procedures to demonstrate vascular and non-vascular structures for interpretation and/or therapeutic intervention. Delivers appropriate patient care and recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of the procedure. Ensures the radiation safety for all patients as well as the other team members involved in the procedure. Clinical assessments, including NIHSS, are deferred to RN and privileged staff. NIHSS education is not required due to assessment deferment and Oregon RT(R) scope of practice. Function/Duties of Position Assists physician during cases while operating a variety of complex radiologic imaging equipment including fluoroscopy, digital subtraction angiography, ultrasonography and cone beam CT application within the Interventional Radiologic suite. Prep the patient and prepare supplies under sterile conditions for the procedure. Scrub in with the physician and assist in performing procedure if needed. Accurately obtains x-rays for the exams while being respectful to the patient’s abilities and safety issues. Operates automatic injectors and selects the appropriate contrast agent for the patient and the exam under the direction of the Interventionalist. In collaboration with other staff, provides patient care during examinations. Responsible for equipment maintenance and use including, but not limited to, recognizing, troubleshooting, reporting, and documenting equipment malfunctions along with coordinating borrowing equipment from other departments. Cross train to another service area (CCL, EP, Hybrid OR, Endoscopy, etc.) Work independently on-call with department physicians and nurse. Required Qualifications Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program; Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists; A valid Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist license issued by the Oregon Board of Medical imaging; OHSU approved Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Two years of experience in the operation of radiologic equipment or an equivalent combination of specialized training and experience. Student candidates must obtain the RT(R) (ARRT) certification within 6 months of their hire date. Candidates must have a current Oregon Board of Medical Imaging (OBMI) temporary license for student hires and permanent license for registered hires. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation Preferred Qualifications 2+ years of experience as an IR technologist supporting complex body and neuro interventional radiology procedures. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Cardiac Interventional and/or Vascular Interventional certification from ASRT Knowledge/experience related to arterial and venous femoral access/sheath removal/management. Knowledge/experience with sterile technique, scrubbing/assisting interventions Knowledge/experience with radiation safety, fluoroscopy Knowledge/experience related to IR procedures including GIB, stroke, and trauma. Able to quickly and accurately assess patients’ conditions Able to efficiently handle emergencies and remain calm in stressful situations Maintain a professional demeanor at all times Excellent written and verbal communication skills High emotional intelligence and able to effectively direct self Attention to detail and time management skills Comfort managing and prioritizing competing demands Skillful at working with different personalities Effective at working within a multi-disciplinary team Able to provide constructive feedback to colleagues Effective at soliciting feedback from peers and engage in conflict resolution Able to use creative solutions to solve problems: find a way to say yes Additional Details Orientation varies depending on experience and assessment of learning needs. Anywhere from 4 weeks minimum to a maximum of 26 weeks. All ranges listed are subject to change based on individual assessment.
