Since the days of Stonewall, we have been transforming lives in LGBTQ+ communities through excellent comprehensive care, provided free of judgment and regardless of ability to pay. In addition, we are continuously pioneering research, advocacy and education to drive positive change around the world, because we believe healthcare is a human right.
Our Mission:
Callen-Lorde Community Health Center provides s ensitive, quality health care and related services targeted to New York’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities — in all their diversity — regardless of ability to pay. To further this mission, Callen-Lorde promotes health education and wellness, and advocates for LGBTQ+ health issues.
About the Role:
The Director of Therapist Development (Director) is a senior clinical leader responsible for advancing the quality, consistency, and clinical excellence of therapy services across Callen-Lorde Community Health Center’s behavioral health programs. Reporting to the Chief Behavioral Health Officer, the Director provides centralized oversight of clinical supervision, therapist practice standards, and evidence-based therapeutic care across Article 28, Article 31/MHOTRS, and integrated behavioral health settings, as applicable.
The Director directly supervises Behavioral Health Supervisors and serves as the department’s lead expert for clinical consultation, supervisory development, and complex case support. In close collaboration with behavioral health and interdisciplinary leadership, the Director helps ensure that therapy services are clinically sound, patient-centered, compliant with regulatory and documentation standards, and aligned with Callen-Lorde’s mission and model of care. The Director maintains a limited clinical caseload, as determined in collaboration with the Chief Behavioral Health Officer, to support clinical practice competency and departmental needs.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Leadership & Strategic Oversight
Provide enterprise-wide oversight for therapy services, ensuring high standards of therapeutic quality, clinical workflows, and evidence-based modalities across the Behavioral Health department.
Lead the development and maintenance of clinical policies, assessment standards, and documentation protocols to ensure consistent, high-quality care across all sites.
Collaborate with the Chief Behavioral Health Officer (CBHO) to align therapy services with organizational goals, maintaining a limited clinical caseload to stay grounded in patient care and departmental needs.
Supervision, Mentorship & Staff Development
Provide direct coaching and mentorship to Behavioral Health Supervisors, strengthening their effectiveness as clinical leaders and ensuring rigorous supervision of providers.
Design and maintain a centralized, department-wide framework for clinical supervision, including escalation protocols for high-risk cases.
Lead the design of targeted training and skill-building initiatives to bridge practice gaps and foster a culture of reflective practice and accountability.
Clinical Quality & Risk Management
Act as the primary resource for complex or high-risk therapy cases, including crisis intervention, safety planning, and trauma-related presentations.
Partner with the Quality team to develop clinical audits, chart review processes, and quality indicators to improve patient outcomes and regulatory readiness.
Ensure all therapy practices meet NYS licensing requirements and standards set by OMH, DOH, HRSA, and other oversight bodies.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Psychiatry, Primary Care, and Operations leadership to ensure seamless care coordination and patient access across Article 28 and Article 31 settings.
Collaborate with operations teams to monitor patient access and visit volume benchmarks while maintaining a clear distinction between clinical and administrative supervision.
Administrative & Performance Leadership
Oversee the full recruitment cycle for therapy leadership and providers; manage performance reviews and professional development plans.
Foster a positive, equitable, and inclusive work environment that encourages professional growth and high-quality, patient-centered care.
Work Schedule:
This is a full-time position based within Callen-Lorde’s Behavioral Health Clinic, which operates Monday through Friday. The role requires onsite presence three (3) days per week (subject to change) and includes some evening hours based on clinic and patient care needs.
Benefits:
Salary will be based on experience and will be accompanied by a comprehensive benefits package including an exceptional low cost medical plan option for you, your spouse/domestic partner and/or your family, dental insurance, vision insurance, no cost life insurance, short- and long-term disability insurance, Flexible Spending Account, Tuition Assistance, commuter benefits, a generous paid time off plan, and a 403B retirement savings plan.
Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Social Work or doctorate in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or related field required.
NYS license and registration as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with SIFI or Psychologist (PhD/PsyD) required.
10+ years of post-licensure psychotherapy experience and at least 7 years of progressive supervisory, leadership, or related clinical management experience required.
Experience working in an Article 28 and/or Article 31/MHOTRS outpatient clinic, Office of Mental Health (OMH) setting, hospital, or other comparable ambulatory behavioral health setting required.
Demonstrated experience providing clinical supervision to licensed and/or unlicensed behavioral health clinicians required.
Desired Characteristics
Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills to serve individuals from varied backgrounds, ensuring care is delivered in a manner that aligns with cultural and linguistic appropriateness requirements and organizational protocols.
Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
Demonstrate advanced clinical judgment and strong supervisory skills.
Demonstrate ability to provide clear, thoughtful, and clinically sound consultation in high-risk, high-acuity, and complex therapeutic situations.
Demonstrate a commitment to the mission of Callen-Lorde, with a focus on providing patient-centered care and serving diverse populations.
