Description

The Cato Institute seeks a passionate Legal Fellow to join its Constitutional Studies team. Cato's Robert A. Levy Center for Constitutional Studies is ground zero for cutting-edge constitutional advocacy. Whether your passion is vindicating individual rights—free speech, self-defense, occupational freedom—pushing back against expansive claims of executive and agency authority, ending the war on drugs, or confining the federal government to its enumerated powers, you'll find serious outlets for it here. Do you think qualified immunity is an unprincipled judicial invention? That rational basis review is an unwarranted rubber stamp? So do we—and we've been doing something about it for decades. This is a hybrid position in Washington, DC. The salary range for this role is $100,000 - $140,000 per year. Compensation is based on the successful candidate's educational background, experience, and skills . About Cato The Cato Institute is a public policy research organization – a think tank – dedicated to the principles of individual liberty, limited government, free markets, and peace. Its scholars and analysts conduct independent, nonpartisan research on a wide range of policy issues. Founded in 1977, Cato owes its name to Cato’s Letters, a series of essays published in 18th-century England that presented a vision of a society free from excessive government power. Those essays inspired the architects of the American Revolution. And the simple, timeless principles of that revolution – individual liberty, limited government, and free markets – turn out to be even more powerful in today’s world of global markets and unprecedented access to information than Jefferson or Madison could have imagined. Social and economic freedom is not just the best policy for a free people; it is an indispensable framework for the future. The Cato Institute is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Responsibilities Editing and supervising amicus briefs in the Supreme Court and courts of appeals Writing blog posts, op-eds, and public commentary that translate that work for broader audiences Developing and executing strategic plans for limiting government Engaging policymakers, journalists, and the public on constitutional issues Things you will not do as a Legal Fellow: fill out timesheets, touch a document request, exchange hostile emails with opposing counsel over scheduling, or fly across the country for a ten-minute status conference. We're serious about that last one.
