Description
The Alberta Provincial Forester provides strategic direction for forest management across Alberta operations. This role represents the organization on provincial forest management matters and serves as a trusted advisor to Timberlands leadership, ensuring forest management systems, plans, and decisions are technically sound, defensible, and aligned with long‑term business objectives. This position will report into the Timberlands General Manager.
The role requires regular interaction with Edmonton‑based organizations, including government and industry partners. Approximately half of business‑related meetings occur in Edmonton, with remaining travel split across Timberlands offices in Grande Prairie, Edson, and Drayton Valley. This position is remote; however, preference will be given to candidates located in the Edmonton, Alberta area to support business needs. The ability to frequently travel and live in proximity to Edmonton is an important consideration. Building effective, trust‑based relationships across Alberta operations requires meaningful in‑person engagement.
What You Will Do
Strategic Leadership & Decision Support
Provide senior leadership on forest resource development to enable long‑term business strategy, Annual Allowable Cut (AAC) integrity, and regulatory compliance Serve as a trusted advisor to Timberlands leadership, supporting decision‑making as forest management data, analyses, and business conditions evolve Ensure integration of forest inventory, growth and yield (G&Y), tree improvement, and forest research into forest management systems and long‑term planning Provide advisory leadership on Forest Management Plan (FMP) development and long‑term planning alignment Collaboration & Influence
Build and maintain strong, trust‑based relationships with Timberlands teams, industry counterparts, and internal business partners Influence senior leaders and cross‑functional teams through credible, balanced advice on forest management and fibre supply issues Develop and sustain a broad internal support network across both Forest Management Agreements (FMAs), recognizing that success depends on collaboration Operational & Financial Oversight
Work with tree improvement, forest inventory, growth and yield, and forest research teams to ensure alignment with fibre supply objectives Help determine AAC strategy and support communication across Timberlands and Wood Products regarding current and future fibre supply Lead development of land‑use objectives and represent organizational interests in subregional planning initiatives Apply strong operational knowledge of Timberlands business functions, including harvest, haul, and planning, to respond effectively to complex and evolving challenges Government, Indigenous & External Relations
Represent the organization on provincial forest management matters and ensure leaders are informed of, and able to influence, pending regulatory and policy changes Work closely with the Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA) to support engagement in provincial forest policy development and revision Support Alberta Indigenous relations strategies in alignment with broader Canadian direction In collaboration with the Sustainability Director, support and coordinate FRIAA and TDA programs and address emerging federal and provincial sustainability issues Apply experience with Alberta wildlife and environmental policy, including caribou, grizzly bear, and cold‑water fish considerations
