Description
Job Summary
This position Is for a non-sworn agency employee who Is training to become an entry-level Certified Deputy Sheriff. Deputy Sheriff Recruits are responsible for performing a full range of civilian duties in any of the bureaus of the Sheriff's Office, including, but not limited to the following: patrol ride a-longs, community outreach events, investigations, administrative duties, or support services assistance. The recruit may be assigned temporarily to a specialty area within the agency based on needs.
Essential Functions
Essential Functions: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed while employed but waiting on the academy start date. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.
Conduct community policing related tasks.
Ride a-longs in Uniform Patrol to gain insight into daily functions as a Deputy Sheriff.
Represents the Sheriff's Office at public meetings and community functions.
Aid the Community Oriented Police Unit.
Assist the Criminal Investigations Division.
Performs maintenance to Sheriff's Office and Jail building and grounds, and vehicles.
Oversees inmate workers on work details.
Complete the necessary paperwork for your application into the academy.
Assists with administrative duties and research as assigned.
Once in the police academy, over a 4–5-month period, various written, practical and physical tests must be completed. Those are as follows, but not limited to:
Firearms qualifications Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) Defensive Tactics Criminal Law and Criminal Procedures Crisis Intervention Training Judgmental and Use of Force training Ability to complete the Physical Ability Test (PAT) test on site at any time under the designated time of 2 minutes and 30 seconds. This is essential as completing the PAT at the academy you will be attending will require you to pass it in under 2 minutes and 6 seconds.
The Physical Ability Test can be found on the P.O.S.T. website main page but below is a summary of what it consists of:
Run 1-3/4 laps around the outside of the course, jump three small hurdles, climb and descend a flight of stairs (twice), low crawl under a 2 ½ foot bar, leap across a simulated 6-foot gap (representing a large ditch), negotiate a 4-foot-high chain link fence panel, climb through a standard size window (four feet high), drag a 150-pound dummy for 20 feet, then run one more lap around the outside of the course.
Additional Duties: Employees in this classification may be expected to perform any related duties as required by proper authority.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of journalistic and public relations principles and practices. Thorough knowledge of Sheriff's Office policies and procedures.
Knowledge of efficient time management and organizational practices including scheduling, prioritizing, and delegating responsibility as needed.
Strong customer service skills, utilizing tact, courtesy, and diplomacy. Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations regarding law enforcement agencies
Skill in oral and written communications.
Skill In operating modern office equipment.
The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
Ability to handle confidential information appropriately. Ability to make engaging public presentations.
Ability to speak professionally with the public and the media
Proper use of study time to ensure the successful completion of the police academy.
Skill in learning, interpreting, applying and explaining complex laws and regulations; reading and interpreting documents such as maps, diagrams and textbooks.
Skill in observing and remembering details of events, names, faces, numbers and physical descriptions; preparing and maintaining clear, accurate and concise reports and files.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to occasionally lift light objects.
Supervisory Controls: The bureau commander or his/her designee assigns work in terms of agency goals and objectives. The work is reviewed through weekly reports and observation of activities.
Guidelines: Guidelines include applicable laws, ordinances, rules, regulations and standard operating procedures related to public safety communications, law enforcement standards, and policies and procedures.
Personal Contacts: Contacts are typically with co-workers, business leaders, educators, attorneys, representatives of the judicial system, federal state and local law enforcement officers, and the general public.
Purpose of Contacts: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve problems, Influence/motivate persons, justify/settle matters, coordinate work efforts and provide services.
Physical Demands: Work may be sedentary In the office environment and/or fieldwork may subject incumbent to extended periods of physical and mental exertion under highly stressful conditions. The person must be able to remain calm and think logically when defending himself/herself from imminent danger, apprehending suspects of crimes, etc. The person must be able to load, unload, aim and operate firearms. The individual must have correctable hearing, visual and speaking abilities to perform assigned duties. The person must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods; walk, run, kneel, stoop, crawl and crouch; make precise and coordinated finger, hand and limb movements; maintain uniform, controlled hand-arm posture or movement; push, pull or drag an adult (averaging 5'6", 160 pounds); lift and carry boxes of evidence (average 50 pounds); use force to restrain/subdue others; work efficiently for long periods of time.
Working Conditions
Work Is performed In a variety of fields, office and In-vehicle settings, including a secure facility and may require exposure to dangerous and life-threatening situations. Employee must be willing to work any hour of the day or night (shift work), overtime, weekends, on call and holidays. Employees must be willing to work at any location in the County and travel on specific assignments; and comply with the agency's grooming standards and wear a uniform.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Must be a United States citizen. Must have a valid State of Georgia Driver's license. Equivalent combination of education and experience Successfully pass the PAT course in under 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
