We’re looking for an experienced and motivated professional to join our team as the Operations Manager . This is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Wellington Hospital Laboratory to deliver a high-quality, professional pathology service.
In this role, you’ll lead and support laboratory teams to ensure work is carried out accurately, efficiently, and in line with quality and compliance standards. You’ll play an important part in mentoring and coaching both direct reports and developing laboratory managers across the region, helping to foster a collaborative and high-performing environment.
Working closely with the General Manager of the Central Region as their second in charge, you’ll contribute to achieving operational objectives, managing budgets, monitoring service delivery KPI's, and implementing improvements where needed. This is an excellent opportunity for a confident leader who enjoys balancing operational oversight, people leadership, and continuous service improvement within an essential healthcare setting.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the day-to-day operations of the Wellington Hospital Laboratory to ensure high-quality pathology service delivery.
Monitor and report on laboratory KPI's to ensure contractual performance targets are consistently achieved.
Oversee laboratory quality systems, accreditation requirements, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained, serviced, and operated safely by qualified staff.
Manage operational budgets, staffing levels, and resource planning in line with business requirements.
Build strong working relationships across teams while coaching and supporting laboratory managers across the region.
Support the General Manager as second in charge, contributing to operational leadership and strategic initiatives.

To be successful in this role you need to have:
A minimum of 5 years’ laboratory experience within a clinical, scientific, or healthcare environment.
A tertiary qualification in a relevant clinical, scientific, or health-related field; management or business qualifications are desirable.
Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced laboratory environment with competing priorities and a strong focus on operational excellence.
Proven ability to prioritise multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and consistently deliver high-quality outcomes.
Strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to build credibility, trust, and collaborative working relationships.
Knowledge of laboratory accreditation and certification requirements, quality systems, and continuous improvement practices.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong customer service focus and strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Strong financial and operational management capability, including experience managing budgets, resources, and workforce planning.
A professional, self-motivated, and proactive approach with integrity, discretion, innovation, and respect for others.
