Water/Wastewater Operator- Utilities Technician/Utilities Technician in Training

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Maintains, repairs and operates, when necessary, drinking water supply systems and wastewater treatment systems. Collects samples from water treatment systems, water wells, and wastewater treatment systems and transports them for testing.
EQUIPMENT AND/OR SOFTWARE OPERATED/USED: The following are examples only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
Sewer jetter, sewer camera, overhead crane, hand tools, power tools, backpack blower, motor vehicles, Microsoft Office Suite, and other applicable equipment and/or software.
INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:
The individual holding this position can be called 24 hours a day to handle an emergency. Infrequent emergency work on evenings, weekends, out-of-town and overtime may be required.
Works in the vicinity of floor or wall openings, elevated platforms, and/or runways; ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; works in a confined space (e.g., manhole); works in an area in which the means of egress is or can be obstructed; works on and around powered platforms and/or vehicle mounted platforms (e.g., manlifts, fire trucks); is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas; is exposed to possible injury from extremely noisy conditions above 85db (e.g., aeration blowers, air blower); is exposed to possible injury from radiation; is exposed to possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, or air contaminants; is exposed to possible injury from hazardous waste; is exposed to possible injury due to unclean or unsanitary conditions; is exposed to possible injury as a result of electrical shock; is exposed to possible injury as a result of working with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines (e.g., ); is exposed to possible injury from explosions; is exposed to possible injury as a result of falling from high places; works in or around crowds; has exposure to fire; has exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; has exposure to hazardous driving conditions.
Note: In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered heavy work.
JOB DESCRIPTION AND WORKER CHARACTERISTICS:
JOB DUTIES in order of importance
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
60% (1)
Operates and maintains water and wastewater treatment systems and related equipment such as lift stations; operates and maintains distribution and collection systems; collects and monitors water samples from water wells, surface water treatment plants, wastewater treatment systems and other sources as required by law and MWCD rules and regulations; assists in the purchase of materials, supplies and equipment for water and wastewater systems, and repair of lift stations; may operate drinking water and wastewater treatment systems as needed; ensures all work is completed in a safe manner in compliance with all local, state and federal codes and guidelines, follows applicable safety rules and regulations.
20% (2)
Performs daily site visits, plant logs and bench sheets.
15% (3)
Repairs and installs pumps, motors or other equipment as needed; repairs sewage force mains; tests and prepares backflow prevention devices; troubleshoots lift station panels
Maintains required licensures and certification, if any.
Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE CHARACTERISTICS: (*indicates developed after employment)

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of high school (12th school grade) or possession of a GED certificate and two (2) or more years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a driver’s license valid in the State of Ohio and must be insurable by MWCD fleet insurance. Possession of OEPA Class I water and wastewater licenses are required for the Utilities Technician position. The Utilities Technician in Training role requires someone that is either currently in the process of obtaining their OEPA Class I water or wastewater license or someone with relevant experience who is willing to obtain an OEPA Class I water and wastewater license. The license must be obtained within a time frame determined prior to hire and pursuant to an MWCD Utilities Technician in Training Employment Agreement.
