Overview
Summary:
Welds together metal components of products such as pipelines, vehicles, and heavy equipment with electric arc-welding equipment.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Welding Preparation: Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun. Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, to known standards. Starts engine driven welding machine to produce electric current. Strikes (forms) arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to workpiece and join edges of workpiece. Preheats workpiece with hand torch or heating furnace. Positions and clamps workpieces together or assembles them in jig or fixture. Tacks assemblies together.
Welding: Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle. Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
Post Welding Duties: Cleans or degreases weld joint or workpiece. Examines weld for bead size and other specifications. Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes. Prepares broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces. Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience One year certificate from college or technical school; minimum of six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills Ability to calculate figures such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Welding certification is preferred.Valid driver's license.Hot work permit certification is a plus.Forklift certification is a plus.
Other Skills and Abilities Ability to pass a 5G test.Strong organizational skills.Ability and willingness to work both individually and as part of a team.
Other Qualifications Understanding of Measuring Tape, Material Grade, Miter Cuts.Must participate and successfully complete the Smith Driver’s Training system taught in house.Insurance requirements. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
