POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Director of Children & Families, the Kiipewii’Chego Advocate will coordinate wraparound support for expectant mothers and families who are navigating healthcare and child welfare systems. The Kiipewii’Chego Advocate will work with First Nations families to work with families to help address concerns and meet their identified goals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Attending weekly case conference and receiving client files during case conferences.
Complete the intake process for new clients.
Work in collaboration with the Perinatal Support Worker to strengthen birth and family sovereignty
Establish effective working relationships with collaterals and parents/caregivers to support the birth plan/the reunification process.
Empower families by connecting them to Elders and Knowledge Keepers to strengthen their cultural identity through ceremony.
Connect families to internal and external resources to improve mental health and wellness, build on parenting skills, and to help parents/caregivers to overcome any issues that may be preventing family reunification through safety planning
Work together with parents and their circle of support to strengthen and enhance parenting skills.
Work with families to evaluate case plans and determine priorities to bring children home.
Advocate for meaningful contact between parents/caregivers and children to improve the relationship and strengthen the family bond.
Establish effective working relationships with collaterals and parents/caregivers to support the reunification process.
Attend Birth Helper gatherings to maintain a strong presence to advance and promote the work in progress at the First Nations Family Advocate Office
Maintain up to date records of client files in the database.
Adherence to office policies and procedures, and confidentiality; and
Mentor and provide guidance to new and/or existing staff
Follow the guiding principles of the 7 Sacred Teachings
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor of Social Work or Bachelor of Arts Diploma. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in the Manitoba Child and Family Services system.
First Nations Doula Training. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Knowledge of First Nations cultural and traditional parenting practices.
Knowledge of First Nation issues related to the child welfare system and health services.
Strong knowledge of the Child and Family Services system, policies, laws and regulations, standards and recent legal and regulatory developments.
Excellent verbal, written and inter-personal communication skills.
Ability to establish trusting and supportive relationships.
Experience developing and facilitating workshops.
Demonstrate problem solving, time management and organizational skills.
Knowledge of First Nation people and communities.
Fluency in First Nation language an asset.
Proficient use of Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Adhere to AMC policies and procedures with specific attention to attendance and professional ethics; and
Possess a valid Class 5F Driver’s License and vehicle, ability to work flexible hours, and travel on request.
Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check, and Clear Child Abuse Checks
