Overview The Controller directs financial activities for the organization by planning, directing and coordinating all accounting operational functions. Manages the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of business results. Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes. Preparation of work papers supporting the monthly close process and month end balances. Review and posts receipts and payments to appropriate ledgers, spreadsheets, records, and databases. Audits invoices against purchase orders, researches discrepancies, and approves for payment. Provides advance warning of variances to most recent budget / forecast in a no surprises manner. Evaluating accounting and internal control systems. Provides counsel and advice to peer management in an effort to optimize operational results. Ensure compliance with Canadian Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE), rather than IFRS, unless otherwise required by stakeholders. Help support and maintain all required federal and provincial tax returns, including corporate income tax (T2), HST/GST returns, Employer Health Tax (EHT), and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) filings. Maintain accurate payroll records and ensure compliance with Ontario Employment Standards Act regarding wages, overtime, vacation, and statutory holiday pay. Oversee remittance of payroll source deductions (CPP, EI, income tax) to the Canada Revenue Agency and ensure timely WSIB and EHT payments. Ensure proper documentation and retention of financial records as required by the Canada Revenue Agency and Ontario Ministry of Finance. Coordinate with external accountants or auditors for year-end financial statement preparation and tax filings, even though statutory audits are not required unless specified by lenders or investors. Prepares reports required by regulatory agencies. Acts as close confidant to Plant Manager of operation. Hiring, training and retaining competent accounting staff. Qualifications Eight (8) years of experience as a Controller Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in Account, Finance or a related field. Eight (8) years of experience interpreting financial reports, and legal documents. PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS: CPA, CMA preferred A minimum of six (6) years of experience defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions.
