The Herbold Computational Biology Program in the Public Health Sciences (PHS) division is seeking a senior Research Administrator (RA) to join our team. Research administrators in the Computational Biology Program provide support to our faculty in pre- and post-award management, regulatory compliance monitoring, and general day-to-day lab operations. The role requires ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment, recognize new issues or concerns that arise in a PI’s portfolio, and coordinate with colleagues in other departments to resolve them. The Research Administrator IV plans for and ensures compliant and effective funding, budget and regulatory administration and general administrative support for one or several Principal Investigators and their labs/departments. The Research Administrator IV collaborates with Principal Investigators and interfaces with other departments as needed on administrative and strategic planning and works autonomously to complete nonscientific grant content and tasks, advise the PIs on relevant matters and develop effective solutions to related issues. Successful candidates should be able to demonstrate strong organizational skills, an interest in continuous learning, ability to analyze and communicate complex regulatory guidelines, and a desire to work in a supportive and collegial community. This role will have the opportunity to work partially at our campus and remotely. A cover letter is required for this application. Responsibilities Budget/Fiscal Support: Participate in strategic planning activities such as setting goals and defining annual objectives. Develop, monitor, track and project the budgets for a complex portfolio of projects with multi-variable aspects (multi-site, sub awards etc.). Develop, run and analyze reports to identify issues and develop recommendations. Develop customized report formats to share information with broad audiences across the organization. Independently determine proper placement for expenses and correct errors to ensure accuracy. Funding Source Administration: Lead and provide strategic guidance on grant submissions and post award activity by conducting tasks such as: Working with faculty to develop strategies for responses/requests. Completion of all technical/non-scientific steps and assigned technical or scientific portions of submissions. Review budgets, identify discrepancies and provide recommendations to the PI on scenarios to resolve the issues with appropriate stakeholders. Regulatory Support: Prepare/Consult/Advise PIs on non-scientific portions of regulatory applications/submissions. Identify missing regulatory components that are required and resolve issues to ensure successful submission or renewal. May advise or consult with Center leadership on changes to Center-wide policies/procedures and help create implementation plans in response to changing regulatory requirements (e.g. Uniform Guidance). Serve as a central point of contact to answer questions and facilitate solutions. Administrative Support: Identify of administrative needs for the department or PI(s); prioritize and ensure related tasks are completed. Coach and develop lower level staff. Oversees the management of projects including occasional event planning and management. Communicates with other departments/entities on Primary Investigator (PI)’s behalf. Resolves discrepancies and issues with stakeholders on PI’s behalf. Translational Data Science Integrated Research Center Administration: Funding Mechanism Development & Execution: Oversee the design, launch, and administration of diverse funding mechanisms (e.g., trainee support, AI application grants, seed/kickstart awards, inter-institutional collaborations), ensuring alignment with scientific goals and sponsor requirements. Program & Portfolio Management: Lead end-to-end project management for a portfolio of training, funding, and scientific collaboration initiatives, including coordination with internal and external partners to support workshops, emerging technology offerings, and trainee/staff skill-building opportunities. Operational Planning & Process Improvement: Develop and refine project management workflows, templates, and governance structures to support scalable, repeatable execution of complex research and training programs. Resource & Budget Oversight: Track project budgets, resource allocations, and funding timelines; coordinate with finance and leadership to support sustainability and future program growth. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's Degree or 4 years relevant experience. Minimum of three years experience managing federal and/or non-federal sponsored research. Experience creating and executing strategic plans. The ability to delegate tasks to appropriate resources. Multi-project grant experience with a wide variety of funding sources. The ability to analyze and interpret regulations, determine impact, and manage change. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Three years as a research administrator preferably with principal investigators/academics. Five years of relevant experience. Prior supervisory experience. Working knowledge of Excel formulas and functions such as creating formulas and working with Pivot Tables. Knowledge/prior experience with Enterprise Software Systems. Ability to tailor communications to specific audiences. Ability to navigate complex internal systems and departments. Basic budgetary knowledge (ability to reconcile, manage, report budget information, etc.). Basic knowledge of accounting terminology. Knowledge of relevant regulatory guidelines such as IRB, IACUC, MUA. A cover letter is required for this application. The annual base salary range for this position is from $93,163 to $139,714, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.
