Description
Randolph-Macon College is seeking a dedicated and experienced Assistant Director of Custodial Services to help lead campus-wide custodial operations. Reporting to the Director of Operations and Physical Plant, this role is essential in ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Assistant Director of Custodial Services oversees daily cleaning operations across all campus facilities. This position supervises two team leaders and approximately 30 custodial staff, while coordinating vendors for specialized services. The ideal candidate is a strong leader who values operational excellence, teamwork, and high standards of service.
Responsibilities
Oversee daily custodial operations across campus facilities Supervise and support team leaders and custodial staff (30+ employees) Assist in managing the custodial budget, procurement, and cost control Coordinate external vendors for deep cleaning, floor care, and special projects Manage staff scheduling, timekeeping, and event coverage Ensure facilities are prepared and maintained for campus events Conduct routine inspections to ensure cleanliness, safety, and quality standards Develop and improve standard operating procedures (SOPs) Lead staff training programs and ensure compliance with safety regulations Provide responsive, professional customer service to campus stakeholders Foster a positive team environment focused on accountability and morale Qualifications
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Business, or related field required (or equivalent combination of education and experience) 5-7 years of progressive custodial or facilities management experience Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience managing teams of 15+ employees Strong leadership and team management skills Experience managing budgets and procurement processes Ability to oversee large teams and manage multiple priorities Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills Knowledge of custodial equipment, cleaning techniques, and safety standards Experience in large, multi-building environments (college, hospital, or corporate campus) preferred Experience managing vendors and service contracts Working Conditions
Work is performed across multiple campus buildings with frequent movement between locations Regular exposure to varying weather conditions Frequent stair climbing and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds Exposure to cleaning materials and products Standard schedule: 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. This position is designated as essential personnel and requires working during periods of inclement weather and/or other emergency situations .
