Description
A Unit Leader has an awesome summer outdoors, being a mentor to campers, and providing fun all day long! Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Camp is one of the outlets to make that mission a reality for many campers. A Unit Leader is a part of that mission each summer.
As a Unit Leader, you will direct the operations of overnight camp and its programs to reflect the goals of the Girl Scout organization. The Unit Leader must be able to supervise unit staff; observe camper behavior; identify and respond to hazards; plan and conduct program activities; assist campers in emergencies (fire, evacuation, illness or injury); teach and promote respect for others, valuing and understanding differences and similarities of campers and staff; and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision.
As a Unit Leader, you will:
• Guide activities and experiences in the unit through girl planning, the session theme and the Girl Scout program emphases.
• Serves as a constant, visible and available source for all unit staff.
• Ensures physical and emotional health and safety of all campers.
• Ensures the camper/adult supervisory ratios are maintained at all times.
• Informs the Health Care Manager and Camp Director of the health status of campers and staff. Sees that campers receive necessary health care from the Health Care Manager, including any scheduled medication.
• Serves as a liaison between administrative staff and unit staff.
• Assists in the supervision and evaluation of unit staff.
• Keeps required records and makes reports as requested by Camp Director.
• Keeps Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director informed of day-to-day unit successes and concerns.
• Practices conflict resolution skills within the unit. Informs the Camp Director or
Assistant Director of any camper or staff problems.
• Helps to ensure the morale of unit staff.
• Conducts a daily check of the unit for safety, cleanliness and good repair.
• Assists with check-in and check-out procedures.
• Prepares unit staff assignments for each session.
• Oversees flag ceremonies and meals, makes announcements, teaches and enforces camp procedures and ensures that kapers are being completed to maintain health and safety standards.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
