Description Provides instructional leadership in the implementation of a comprehensive literacy program through coaching, supporting, and guiding teachers in best practices for literacy instruction including the integration of literacy throughout the day and across all contents. Analyzes school literacy data in collaboration with administrators in planning for future literacy needs. Responsibilities Leadership Guides, plans, directs, and models research-based instruction across the English Language Arts curriculum for foundational skills and language comprehension aligned to the science of reading. Works with the school's instructional leadership team to identify curricular needs in literacy. Facilitates and supports ongoing data team meetings to analyze progress monitoring and benchmark data and make recommendations for student instruction and interventions. Works collaboratively with administration to develop, implement, and coordinate a comprehensive literacy intervention program. Serves as a resource for administrators, classroom teachers, paraeducators, parents, and students to improve literacy. Disseminates information and materials on current research related to educational trends to the faculty and community. Assists literacy team members in providing professional development on a comprehensive literacy program to administrators and teachers by creating and presenting workshops for faculty meetings, grade level meetings, and planning sessions with teachers. Serves as a resource for families by participating in parent conferences, answering parent concerns, and recommending enrichment activities to parents and teachers, as appropriate. Provides professional development opportunities, related to generating evidence of student literacy learning, data analysis and acquisition of instructional best practices, peer visits with follow-up reflection, and collaborative team planning. Maintains professional knowledge of literacy evidence-based practices. Remains active in education associations related to reading/language arts to include participation in conferences, workshops, reading specialist meetings and other staff development opportunities. Model’s high levels of professionalism. Instruction Analyzes assessment data to identify students’ strengths and needs. Designs and/or recommends appropriate tiered interventions for students. Provides evidence-based literacy intervention to students who are experiencing difficulty. Plans and collaborates with classroom teachers, special area teachers, and grade level teams to align instruction for students and assist teachers in implementing best practices. Models and demonstrates lessons with classroom teachers to improve students’ academic performance. Assists teachers and administrators in adapting reading/language arts curriculum to meet the needs of a diverse student population. Assessment Coordinates and administers reading assessments that are used to monitor student progress and identify individual student needs. Administers individual diagnostic assessments using district assessments to determine the strengths and needs of students. Prepares a written report for students’ cumulative records as needed. Shares assessment information with classroom teachers, parents, and specialized personnel such as psychologists, special educators, guidance counselors or speech language pathologists to provide an effective academic program for students. Analyzes data and assists teachers in analyzing data from reading assessments (e.g., screening, progress monitoring, diagnostic, outcomes) to identify strategies and make recommendations to meet the needs of individual students. Provides professional development in the administration of assessments. Maintains accurate records and submits data to meet the state reporting requirements. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Education, Training and Experience : Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree or master’s equivalency. Three years of successful teaching experience. Licenses and Certificates : Possession of a Maryland Educator Advanced Professional Certificate with a Reading Specialist Endorsement. OR Education, Training and Experience : Education, training, and experience as required by the Maryland Pathway to Initial Licensure for Reading Specialist. Licenses and Certificates : Possession of, or eligibility for, a Maryland Educator Professional License and Reading Specialist Licensure. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities : Knowledge of the principles and practices of pedagogy. Knowledge of current research-based instructional practices in reading/language arts. Knowledge of and skill in reading assessment and diagnostic-prescriptive teaching in reading. Knowledge of and skill in the use of database, internet, spreadsheet, word processing, and related applications. Strong human relations skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Strong organization and communication skills. Ability to appropriately maintain confidential information. PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS : The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment. Work may require the ability to move around the school and classroom. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT : Requires attendance at after-school and evening meetings and events.
