Summary of Position
The Lab Aide I is responsible for supporting the Histology department with all clerical and ancillary duties in keeping all equipment ready to run for patient output. This position works under the direction of the supervisor and follows standard Laboratory procedures and policies.
Key Job Elements
Handles, prepares, and loads/unloads stainers; conducts dehydrating and coverslip slides utilizing manual or automatic systems.
Prepares, cleans, sterilizes, maintains, and shuts down Laboratory equipment, accessories, and instruments.
Responsible for filing, tracking, retrieval, and accurate record keeping.
Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling of all materials.
Routinely checks and verifies that surgical case numbers match blocks and slides; prints Labels as appropriate.
Records in Laboratory logbooks all slides and stains prepared. Logs appropriate information into the Laboratory Information system.
Qualifications
Knowledge/Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences strongly preferred.
Prior lab experience is preferred.
Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
All laboratory personnel will be required to maintain schedule flexibility and when problems arise, may be required to work overtime.
Lab Specific Qualifications
Ability to multitask while working in a fast-paced, high-volume, deadline-driven environment.
Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail.
Ability to tolerate extensive periods seated and/or standing.
Must possess the ability to perform repetitive motion.
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
May have exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes, and bio-hazardous material/chemicals, including formalin, in the lab environment.
May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents; handle live human specimens, tissues, and bodily fluids.
