Description
Description
We made history and now we work to transform the future – for our customers, our communities and our families. You'll see your work on the road every day, helping people move freely and pursue their dreams. At Ford, you can build more than vehicles. Come build what matters.
In this position...
We are seeking an innovative and highly experienced Research Engineer to join our Advanced Emissions Systems department. This role will be pivotal in leading the concept definition, design, integration, modeling, and validation of exhaust aftertreatment systems for advanced diesel and gasoline propulsion systems. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in high-fidelity simulation and modeling of complex aftertreatment systems. This position demands a blend of advanced theoretical knowledge, practical application of simulation tools, and a drive for pioneering new technologies.
Responsibilities
What you'll do...
Advanced Aftertreatment System Modeling & Simulation:
Lead the design, development, and validation of advanced 1D/3D multi-physics models for exhaust aftertreatment systems, including Three Way Catalysts (TWC), Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems, Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC), Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPF), and Hydrocarbon (HC) Trap components.
Develop and apply high-fidelity aging frameworks to simulate performance degradation over the full useful life of aftertreatment systems, considering various mileage and temperature profiles.
Utilize and advance simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, GT-SUITE, AVL Cruise M, COMSOL, and Python for aftertreatment system analysis and optimization.
Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques (e.g., Python-based applications) to optimize system performance prediction, reduce simulation cycle time, and improve accuracy for real-world driving profiles.
System Design & Integration:
Lead emissions system concept definition, design, and integration of new aftertreatment concepts and technologies, including associated hardware, controls, and packaging for engine, transmission, and generator applications.
Contribute to systems engineering and quality document development, including Boundary Diagrams, P-Diagrams, and DFMEAs.
Research & Innovation:
Conduct extensive 1D/3D modeling and R&D for light-duty and heavy-duty propulsion platforms, focusing on transient operating conditions and advanced aftertreatment components.
Document research findings, present results at internal and external forums, and contribute to patents and technical publications.
Qualifications
You'll have...
Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field.
7+ years of experience in aftertreatment system modeling, simulation, and optimization for propulsion systems (diesel, gasoline, HEV).
Demonstrated expertise in Tier 4 emissions standards and regulations, with a strong understanding of aftertreatment technologies (TWC, SCR, DPF, DOC & GPF).
Advanced proficiency in modeling and simulation software such as MATLAB/Simulink, GT-SUITE, AVL Cruise M, COMSOL, and expertise in 1D/3D multi-physics modeling
Strong programming skills in Python for data analysis, AI/ML applications, and simulation optimization.
Proven ability to optimize complex energy management strategies for engine and emission control.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.
Even better, you may have...
Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field.
Demonstrated track record of performance in research and development, including patents, publications, and presentations.
Six Sigma Black Belt certification or strong understanding of quality methodologies
