Description
Job Title: Clinical Veterinarian
Department: Veterinary Services
Reports to: Attending Veterinarian
JOB SUMMARY:
The Alpha Genesis, Inc. (AGI) Clinical Veterinarian implements the program of clinical evaluation and veterinary medical care for non-human primates bred for research. As the principal provider of general preventative, diagnostic, and/or therapeutic veterinary medicine, the Clinical Veterinarian oversees the operation of the AGI veterinary hospitals and veterinary technician staff. The Clinical Veterinarian has the experience to provide daily examinations, make medical and behavioral observations, administer appropriate techniques and treatments, and perform research tasks according to established protocols. The Clinical Veterinarian performs gross necropsies as part of the program for animal health surveillance and disease control. The Clinical Veterinarian may evaluate protocols submitted by investigators involving animal use in research. The Clinical Veterinarian participates in the planning and development of new programs and facilities, and performing other related duties as assigned. The Clinical Veterinarian provides supervision and support to AGI animal care and facilities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Clinical Veterinarian must be able to perform the following tasks with minimum supervision:
•Oversee all aspects of colony health, including health surveillance
•Provide clinical veterinary care, examination, treatment, surgery and follow-up for colony primates
•Provide consultation and instruction to investigators and technical research and veterinary staff in animal care, pre- and post-procedural care, new procedures, aseptic surgery, and related topics
•Review animals care protocols and serve as a member of animal care and use committees
•Provide emergency and weekend on-call veterinary medical coverage
•Maintain records of work performed
•Perform bi-annual physical exams on colonies
•Perform miscellaneous job-related duties, as assigned
•Communicate with Managers and Directors about colony needs
•Follow Managers’ and Directors’ guidelines for group formations, animal movements, and other project-specific client needs
•Assist in developing and implementing personnel health and safety policies
•Perform other responsibilities as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Clinical Veterinarian supervises the veterinary clinical staff personnel.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
To perform this job successfully, the Clinical Veterinarian must:
•Demonstrate excellent veterinary medical knowledge (e.g. animal anatomy, physiology, and pathology)
•Have the ability to provide veterinary care and interpret diagnostic test results (e.g. history, physical examination, sample collection, basic field tests and interpretation of clinical laboratory and radiology results)
•Have the ability to provide treatment skills such as supportive care, medications, surgery and pain management
•Manage stress and adapt well to changing situations
•Understand professional limitations in knowledge, skills and ability, and seek appropriate assistance when needed
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
DVM/VMD from a veterinary medical college accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Current state licensure in at least one state and able to obtain licensure in South Carolina within 60 days of hire. The Clinical Veterinarian must be eligible to obtain DEA licensure. Three-five years of laboratory primate experience is preferred. Post-doctoral or veterinary research experience is preferred. ACLAM eligibility or diplomate status is highly preferred. The Clinical Veterinarian must have good reading, writing, mathematics and computer skills (Access, MS Word, Excel, email and internet).
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
South Carolina Drivers’ License or equivalent. Current DVM licensure in at least one state and ability to obtain South Carolina License within 60 days.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents, including scientific literature, research reports and protocols, standard operation procedures (SOPs), and other instructions. Ability to communicate in writing to all levels of employees, including Directors and Managers.
REASONING ABILITIES:
Must be able to make decisions relative to research protocols and must know when to contact the Head of Research and Development and the Attending Veterinarian. Must have sufficient skills and abilities to know when there are problems within primate social groups and be able to work with appropriate staff to stabilize groups. The individual must be able to deal with diverse problems, to propose resolutions, and implement approved resolutions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to undergo fit testing for a N95 respirator mask. The employee may be require to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Additionally, the employee must be able to distinguish colors.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The AGI work environment characteristics described below are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to inclement weather, including cold, heat with high humidity, and precipitation. The noise level is usually moderate. The job requires the ability to direct those catching animals in safe and proper procedures, and to catch small to medium-sized animals without supervision. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds may be required. Work hours are 8 hours per day, five days per week. There may be overtime hours required as well as weekend and evening work based on animal health and Company needs.
