Description
Overview
CVP is seeking a distinguished Director of Oncology for an open-ended consulting engagement supporting a critical, high-visibility federal healthcare initiative. This opportunity is ideally suited for a MD Oncologist with VA experience who is looking to leverage deep clinical expertise and firsthand institutional knowledge in a senior program leadership capacity. In this role, you will serve as a senior project leader on the engagement, providing strategic direction, cross-functional oversight, and executive stakeholder engagement across a complex, multi-site healthcare transformation program. You will lead a team of project managers and workstream leads, providing mentorship and strategic guidance to advance program objectives with precision and impact.
The ideal candidate is a clinically credentialed, operationally experienced leader who understands the complexities of VA healthcare delivery from the inside and is ready to apply that expertise to drive large-scale program strategy, stakeholder alignment, and measurable outcomes at a national level. Establish and maintain program governance frameworks, decision-making structures, and escalation pathways across complex, multi-site healthcare transformation efforts
Lead executive-level engagement with federal healthcare leadership, drawing on firsthand knowledge of VA clinical operations and organizational culture
Drive cross-functional coordination across clinical, administrative, technical, and operational teams to ensure cohesive program execution
Translate clinical expertise into actionable program strategy, workflow design, and implementation planning
Oversee development and maintenance of program plans, risk registers, milestone tracking, and executive reporting
Identify and mitigate program risks, issues, and dependencies, escalating as appropriate
Lead development of program documentation, briefing materials, and strategic communications for senior leadership audiences
Mentor and guide junior project managers and workstream support staff
Assess emerging oncology trends, care delivery innovations, and opportunities to enhance program outcomes at scale
Ensure all program activities align with federal healthcare regulations, compliance requirements, and organizational objectives
Qualifications
MD required with oncology specialty
Active or former VA clinical experience, direct working knowledge of VA healthcare systems and operations. Candidates with VA oncology program leadership experience within the last 3–5 years are strongly preferred.
15+ years of experience in healthcare, with a combination of clinical practice and program or operational leadership
8+ years of direct oncology experience, including exposure to large-scale program implementation, quality improvement, or transformation initiatives
Demonstrated ability to engage and influence senior federal healthcare leadership and executive stakeholders
Strong command of program governance, risk management, and performance measurement frameworks
Ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance; U.S. Citizenship required
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including executive-level briefing and reporting capabilities
Desired Skills
Direct experience practicing or leading oncology programs within the VA healthcare system
Familiarity with VHA organizational structure, VISN operations, and federal program management frameworks
1099 Consulting Engagement with Full-time employment following program award
