Description The  Registered Veterinary Technician role is an exciting opportunity to play a key part on the Community Medicine Team of one of the oldest animal welfare organizations in the country. The  Registered Veterinary Technician plays a vital part in supporting the community, especially for those clients and animals who may not have another accessible option for care. The Registered Veterinary Technician is responsible for assisting veterinarians in the delivery of services and care, including surgical and dental procedures, as well as performing highly skilled procedures independently. Through dedicated teamwork, this position has a direct positive impact on animal welfare in the local community. An RVT must have a current license registered in good standing with the California Veterinary Medical Board. East Bay SPCA is a 501(c)3 non-profit committed to the welfare of dogs and cats in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Our mission is to transform the lives of cats and dogs by enriching the human-animal bond through respected and accessible expertise. EBSPCA is one of the nation’s oldest humane organizations, in operation since 1874, and receives no funding from any national organizations. Qualifications Responsibilities Full-Service Clinic Prepare and maintain accurate client and patient records for examinations, surgeries, and treatments. Restrain animals safely and appropriately. Assist veterinarian with appointments. Administer vaccinations and collect diagnostic samples via venipuncture, cystocentesis, and other methods. Conduct vaccine clinics with or without a veterinarian on premise in compliance with California Veterinary Medical Board guidelines. Assist in preparing and dispensing prescriptions as directed by the veterinarian. Perform diagnostic procedures including x-rays, ECGs, urine sediment, skin scrapings, and cytology. Perform treatments within the scope of practice approved by the California Veterinary Medical Board. Place and maintain IV catheters; administer IV, IM, SQ, and oral medications. Provide fluid therapy, including accurate calculation and administration of IV and SQ fluids. Administer pre-anesthetic and anesthetic agents (IV, IM, inhalation) and monitor patients through recovery. Prepare animals for surgery, including induction, intubation, and surgical site preparation. Monitor anesthesia using appropriate equipment (e.g., Cardell® monitor, ECG, pulse oximetry) and adjust anesthetic levels under veterinary supervision. Assist in surgical procedures. Perform dental procedures, including scaling, polishing, digital x-rays, and extractions. Provide appointment and post-operative care, discharge instructions, and client education on home care and follow-up. Perform wound care, urinary catheterization, and apply bandages and dressings. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of surgical suites, and all other clinic spaces. Accurately invoice clients and maintain surgery logs and patient records. Provide emergency support including CPR, airway management, and oxygen therapy. Sterilize and maintain surgical instruments and packs; report items needing repair or replacement. Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot anesthetic and monitoring equipment. Perform all other duties as assigned by the veterinarian or clinic manager. Spay/Neuter Clinic Assist with intake, discharge, and client communication for spay/neuter patients. Accurately and efficiently calculate and withdraw needed medication. Organize the flow of patients to meet high-volume requirements. Prepare animals for surgery, including induction, intubation, and surgical site preparation. Monitor anesthesia and recovery using appropriate monitoring techniques. Administer pre-anesthetic and anesthetic agents (IV, IM, inhalation) under veterinary supervision. Provide post-operative care, including extubating, temperature monitoring, and recovery support. Administer vaccinations and assist with prescription preparation as directed. Maintain accurate client and patient records for surgical and medical services. Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of all clinic areas including surgery, treatment, and recovery. Sterilize and maintain surgical instruments and packs; report items needing repair or replacement. Restrain animals safely and appropriately. Maintain clinic inventory and restock supplies as needed. Provide emergency support including CPR, airway management, and oxygen therapy. Transport animals between the Baldwin campus and the Spay/Neuter Clinic. Perform all other duties as assigned. Qualifications A valid California Registered Veterinary Technician license in good standing. Minimum of one year working in a veterinary clinic.  High volume veterinary clinic experience preferred. Bilingual preferred. Proven organizational skills and effective communication. Competent animal handler. Competent in a Windows environment. Become Fear Free Certified within 90 days of hire. Have personal transportation and a valid driver's license that is insurable by East Bay SPCA. Working Conditions Work is performed in an animal shelter and veterinary clinic environment with exposure to seasonal outdoor conditions. Animal contacts and related injuries, including bites and scratches, may occur. Must be comfortable handling dogs and cats on a daily basis.  Will handle sick, injured, or deceased pets. Noise exposure varies and often includes uncontrolled barking and other animal vocalizations. Animal waste contact, smells and visual exposure is prevalent. Frequent exposure to and/or handling of industrial cleaning supplies and controlled         substances. Ability to lift/carry animals up to 50 lbs without assistance and >50lbs with assistance. Frequent standing, walking, bending and stooping. Ability to perform repeated hand movements without accommodation.
