Description

Description: The Council is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 50l (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code of l954 (or the corresponding provision of any future United States Internal Revenue law) and shall solicit and receive grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and contributions from public and private sources in order to perform the following functions, among others: A. To act as the governing body of the District of Columbia state-based program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. B. To broaden general public understanding, appreciation of and interest in the humanities and their application and importance in relation to all aspects of the current conditions of life in the District of Columbia and the nation. C. To create and implement a program which promotes constructive and mutually beneficial interaction and dialogue between academic humanists and District of Columbia citizens who are not engaged in full-time academic scholarship. D. To fund humanities projects throughout the District of Columbia which meet the guidelines set forth by the Council. Qualifications : The Council's affairs shall be managed by a Board of Directors composed of not more than twenty-three (23) directors. Eighteen of these directors shall be known as the "elected directors" and shall represent a balanced representation between scholars and practitioners in the humanities and persons who are civic leaders and representative of the general public. All of the persons elected as directors must reside and preferably work within the boundaries of the District of Columbia. The directors shall use reasonable efforts to ensure that the Board is representative of the social, economic and ethnic diversity in Washington D.C., of all geographic Wards and of both sexes equally. Not more than five (5) persons may be appointed by the Mayor of the District and these five (5) directors shall be known as "appointed directors".
