Summary/Objective
The Clinical Shadowing Intern is an undergraduate student participating in a structured, paid internship designed to earn observational and clinical exposure hours in preparation for graduate or professional school applications. This position is strictly observational and does not include the provision of direct clinical services.
The intern will gain exposure to healthcare delivery within VOANR programs, with an emphasis on nursing and medical provider roles, interdisciplinary collaboration, and healthcare systems in a nonprofit setting.
Essential Functions
Permitted Duties – Observation & Non-Licensed Support:
Shadow licensed nursing staff, and behavioral health professionals as approved
Observe patient flow, care coordination, and interdisciplinary treatment team meetings
Observe consultations, or case discussions when appropriate
Observe nursing workflows, including medication management and patient education activities (observation only)
Attend approved trainings, in-service sessions, and staff meetings
Learn healthcare terminology, workflows, and scope-of-practice distinctions
Observe documentation and compliance processes without accessing or entering records
Assist with non-clinical administrative tasks such as organizing training materials or preparing non-confidential packets
Participate in quality improvement or systems-learning activities under supervision
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
Complete internship logs, reflections, or documentation required by VOANR or the academic institution
Note: This position is observation-only and educational in nature. Under no circumstances shall the intern perform the following:
Provide medical, nursing, behavioral health, or clinical services
Conduct intakes, assessments, screenings, vitals, or procedures
Administer medications or participate in medication delivery
Document in clinical or medical records or access EMR/EHR systems
Independently interact with clients in a service capacity
Make treatment decisions or recommendations
Competencies
Professionalism and ethical conduct
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Interest in healthcare professions, particularly medicine or physician assistant pathways
Willingness to learn in observational settings
Effective communication and respectful engagement with staff
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This position operates in clinical and office environments and may involve observing activities in healthcare, residential, or program settings. The role routinely uses standard office equipment for non-clinical tasks.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here represent those that must be met to perform essential functions, including standing or sitting for extended periods, observing clinical activities, and attending meetings or trainings.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a temporary, paid internship position. Hours and schedule will be determined based on program availability and internship learning objectives. Evening or weekend hours may be required depending on observation opportunities.
