Description
This position offers the opportunity to work in the clinic and infusion areas within a thriving community cancer practice.
Under supervision of the Administrative Nurse, guided by policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with the Clinical Nursing Staff, the Hospital Assistant III (Medical Assistant) assists in the delivery of care to patients in multiple Cancer Center ambulatory group practices. This position supports the Cancer Services and Ambulatory Services and Pediatric Infusion Unit. Work includes a variety of personal care and nursing procedures including assuring positive care outcomes. They will perform assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of the specialty care services provided to patients within the practices. They are required to learn and be able to assist in all Cancer Center specialty practices. They are required to adhere to the Telephone and House Standards as adopted by the Medical Center. This position requires the flexibility to work evenings, weekends and Holidays.

Performs routine clinical functions, including but not limited to vital signs, height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse ox and documents accurately in APEX.
Coordinates use of interpreter as appropriate. Work with interpreting services to facilitate interpreter participation for infusion appointments in person, by video or by phone.
Assists nurses and patients in preparation for infusion treatment and/or procedures.
Able to perform cleaning procedures in outpatient area and maintain all appropriate logs.
Transports patients as directed and ensures their safety.
Monitors patient flow in and out of the infusion area (communicate with charge nurse when patients are waiting for extended periods of time, chairs are available and clean, etc.).
Obtains specimens and performs simple Point of Care Testing as directed. Including QA/QC and EKGs.
Obtains specimens and performs simple laboratory procedures conforming to all policies and procedures related to specimen handling and processing.
Performs clinical activities in an accurate and timely manner.
Participates in updating mandatory logs (i.e.: temperature log, disaster cabinet log, crash cart log).
Offers patients juice, blankets and other care items during their visit.
Keeps blanket warmer stocked.
Assists nurse in warming towels and blankets.
Complies with all Ambulatory Services and Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative and clinical practice. Complies with activities mandated by Joint Commission/Title 22.
Successful completion of annual competency testing.

Yes Operations Maintenance
Maintains clean, well-stocked treatment rooms. Responsible for maintaining supplies at adequate par level per infusion usage.
Responsible for ordering patient care amenities such as juice, coffee, etc.
Maintains daily temperature logs and brings any temperature variations to the immediate attention of supervisor.
Adheres to infection control procedures as outlined in the Infection Control Manual.
Maintains biohazard and chemotherapy waste bins to ensure removal from infusion on daily basis and/or when bins are full.
Adheres to the Ambulatory Services policy and procedures for the cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing of equipment.
Coordinates with RNs and other Hospital Assistant to cover lunches and breaks.
Participates in various QI and Customer Service initiatives as relevant to hospital and department activities.

Yes Patient Scheduling and Processing
Schedules and pre-registers patients by telephone or in person for appointments meeting established accuracy and performance standards.
Collects and verifies insurance and referral/authorization information. Enters data into the system appropriately.
Utilizes and masters the APEX system in the support of all aspects of patient processing.
Pulls and prepares charts prior to patient appointment following established practice criteria. When preparing charts, ensures current MD orders are present and if missing contacts referring practice prior to patient’s appointment to secure the orders.
Files all patient related information into charts from designated file station and other sources.
Answers phone as needed, referring calls to appropriate person including receiving and correctly documenting panic values and referring them to the appropriate RN for immediate action. Takes accurate and thorough messages.

Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
All candidates must meet at least one of the following criteria:
Certificate of training or graduation from an accredited MA, Home Health Aide, PCA, CNA, dental or paramedic program or college degree in a related field such as community health, infectious disease, public health or health education
1 year of relevant experience as a Medical Assistant in a hospital or medical practice
6 months of pediatric infusion experience
Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Ability to communicate effectively, both directly and over the phone.
Able to meet physical requirements.

"ExternalDescriptionStr": "<p>This position offers the opportunity to work in the clinic and infusion areas within a thriving community cancer practice. </p><p>Under supervision of the Administrative Nurse, guided by policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with the Clinical Nursing Staff, the Hospital Assistant III (Medical Assistant) assists in the delivery of care to patients in multiple Cancer Center ambulatory group practices. This position supports the Cancer Services and Ambulatory Services and Pediatric Infusion Unit. Work includes a variety of personal care and nursing procedures including assuring positive care outcomes. They will perform assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of the specialty care services provided to patients within the practices. They are required to learn and be able to assist in all Cancer Center specialty practices. They are required to adhere to the Telephone and House Standards as adopted by the Medical Center.
