Description

Compensation Salary Schedule Overview The school uniformed security officer job is a position assigned to a specific school and hired by the principal. Under general direction, the purpose of the position is to provide for the security and environmental safekeeping of an assigned location of the school district. Employees in this classification are responsible for ensuring all persons entering and/or exiting assigned location are authorized on the premises. Additional duties include helping to ensure the campus is free of drugs and/or weapons and performing interview and investigation activities in response to incidents or unauthorized activities. Position addresses security violations in accordance with prescribed district policies and procedures and is responsible for reporting illegal activities to appropriate administration and/or enforcement entities. Essential functions as outlined herein are performed according to assigned district location. Performs related work as directed. Responsibilities and Qualifications EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.Provides timely and accurate reporting to supervisor on incidents taking place on campus.Writes incident reports and witness statements efficiently and with precision.Provides security services at schools, facilities, and special events, as directed.Performs patrols of school and monitors its immediate surroundings.Monitors student activities, as directed.Conducts security checks of facilities and grounds.Identifies and resolves suspected or real security breaches or violations.Monitors and supports student arrival and dismissal.Supports on-campus vehicle traffic management.Enforces school-based student parking violations.Conducts safety screenings using metal detection devices, including searching bags, backpacks, purses, etc.Monitors student activity and assists school staff with maintaining acceptable student behavior.Uses evidence based strategies to engage with students that exhibit physical or verbal aggression related to behavioral, emotional, and/or psychological conditions, including but not limited to, behavior interruption and redirection, positive reinforcement, pairing (building rapport), and prompting.Supervises students’ activities inside and outside the classroom.Employs proactive measures to de-escalate verbal and physical conflicts.Assists students in resolving disputes utilizing communication and conflict resolution skills.Employs the district’s emergency procedures and emergency response protocols in a proficient manner.Responds to emergencies and critical incidents such as fire alarms or medical emergencies for the purpose of confining, resolving, preventing injury, or otherwise hazardous situations.Inspects facility for potential hazards (e.g., equipment left running, gas leaks).Provides security for entrances and gateways by checking visitor and parent identification and authorization information; provides direction and information as requested.Monitors and reviews video surveillance cameras for suspicious activity or disruptions on school campus.Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS. With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.Responsible for timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities.The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. MARGINAL FUNCTIONS While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.Performs security related duties as directed. MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or GED; three (3) years previous security, military, law enforcement, or correctional experience, with demonstrated investigative and interpersonal communication skills for monitoring and resolving a variety of student conflicts or outbursts; or any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions. Must possess strong interpersonal skills, good observation skills and judgement, and the ability to work with security, communications, and law enforcement team members. Requires an understanding of the juvenile court system. Requires knowledge of the code of conduct with infractions, consequences and behaviors.Requires successful completion and ability to remain current in Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), first aid and CPR training; requires ability to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license; requires the ability to obtain and remain up to date on mandated training classes required for the position; requires satisfactory district background investigation.The incumbent is considered to be “essential personnel” during an emergency and can be subject to being held over or called back to a district location at all times. PERFORMANCE APTITUDES Data Utilization : Requires the ability to evaluate, audit, deduce, and/or assess data and/or information using established criteria. Includes exercise of discretion in determining actual or probable consequences, and in referencing such evaluation to identify and select alternatives. Human Interaction : Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization : Requires the ability to operate standard radio communication equipment, standard office equipment, and assigned motorized security vehicle. Verbal Aptitude : Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and advisory data and information. Ability to speak clearly and concisely to diverse populations often under difficult and stressful situations. Mathematical Aptitude : Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Functional Reasoning : Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership. Ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution; to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgement concerning choices of action. Capable of making critical decisions during hazardous, potentially life threatening and stressful situations. Situational Reasoning : Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable. Capable of maintaining situational awareness so as to identify emerging issues or make connections to disparate events. ADA COMPLIANCE Physical Ability : Some tasks may involve the ability to exert extremely heavy physical effort in very heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials in excess of 100 pounds, such as when transporting sick or injured persons. Sensory Requirements : Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Environmental Factors : Tasks are regularly performed with some risk of exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dust, humidity, rain, temperature extremes, traffic hazards, and violence.The Orange County School District will provide reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities to allow them to perform the essential functions of the job when such individuals request an accommodation.
