Description

Overview and Responsibilities Under the direction of the truck driving instructors and lead truck driving instructional assistants, this position is responsible for driving and related operational skills training for students pursuing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). This position will also maintain records, prepare reports, and initiate and develop client training for Workforce Solutions and Continuing Education. Responsibilities: Demonstrate and supervise student driving under a variety of environments and driving conditions, including straight line backing, developing depth perception, making turns, backing into docks and parking places, mirror adjustment, and how to use large mirrors and convex mirrors. Perform work duties outside in all weather conditions. Provide training for students in the truck driving program and other students seeking a CDL. Administer CDL examinations. Driving simulations. Brake board activities. Purchase supplies. Perform light maintenance on and washing and cleaning of vehicles. Paint and maintain lines on driver training areas. Demonstrate shifting techniques, how to couple and uncouple semi-trailer combinations, vehicle inspection, and scaling as directed. Provide collision avoidance training. Assist with program recruitment efforts. Participate in the assessment of student learning. Maintain flexibility in delivery of training. Demonstrate commitment to service excellence standards. Function in a team environment without direct supervision and in a manner that supports a cohesive departmental atmosphere by attending and reaching consensus at team meetings. Communicate effectively and maintain positive relationships with students, instructors, truck supply and maintenance personnel, trucking company personnel, and Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) representatives verbally and in writing. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to drive all truck and trailer combinations offered in the truck driving program. Ability to plan, organize, and facilitate quality training. Ability to work effectively with students in both one-on-one and group instruction situations. Ability to model integrity through self-awareness, personal accountability, ethical behavior, quality standards, and sustainable practices. Ability to think critically by applying problem solving practices, acquiring relevant information, using technology and other resources appropriately, and evaluating alternatives. Ability to communicate effectively by speaking and writing clearly, concisely, and professionally; practicing active listening; reading critically and adapting communication for audience. Ability to value diversity and demonstrate commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally respectful interactions with persons of diverse ethnic, cultural, social-economic, or educational backgrounds. Basic knowledge of and skills with technology including software programs for communication, data collection, and decision making including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel. Qualifications Three years of experience operating large trucks and 48’ or 53’ trailer required, seven years strongly preferred. Completion of formal truck driving training preferred. Training and teaching experience in the trucking industry preferred. Experience with van, flatbed, tanker and doubles preferred. Certified examiner preferred. Must possess and maintain a current and valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement. Employment offer and continued employment is contingent upon negative DOT drug test(s) and acceptable driving record. In evaluating candidates for this position, the College may consider a combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform duties of position.
