Supervises and instructs prisoner workers in horticultural practices, chemical use, and other propagation techniques.   </p>\n<p> </p>\n<p><strong><u>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS</u></strong></p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Horticulture or other closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience in horticulture, agriculture, and/or landscape design.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>A pesticide applicator license and ServSafe certification must be obtained within three (3) months of the hire date.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p><strong><u>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS</u></strong></p>\n<ul>\n <li>Supervises and instructs prisoner workers participating in the Horticulture Program.</li>\n <li>Designs, develops, and administers the agriculture plans for the Jail Gardens.</li>\n <li>Manages day-to-day operational activities in the Jail Gardens.</li>\n <li>Manages the public produce sales and other related events</li>\n <li>Tracks resource use and garden production information.</li>\n <li>Generates statistical data and progress reports.</li>\n <li>Works cooperatively with program stakeholders and participants.</li>\n <li>Researches and develops educational opportunities for prisoner workers and the public.</li>\n <li>Facilitates Jail Garden tours for stakeholders and the public.</li>\n <li>Instructs Food Handlers Permit classes to prisoner workers.</li>\n</ul>\n<p> </p>\n<p><strong><u>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA)</u></strong></p>\n<p> </p>\n<p><strong>Knowledge of:</strong><strong> </strong></p>\n<ul>\n <li>Best horticulture practices and standards</li>\n <li>Data collection and analysis</li>\n <li>Basic computer programs (Microsoft Office)</li>\n <li>Problem-solving and decision-making techniques</li>\n <li>Safe food handling procedures</li>\n <li>Ponds and habitat maintenance</li>\n <li>Integrated pest management techniques</li>\n <li>Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)</li>\n</ul>\n<p><strong>Skills and Abilities to:</strong><strong> </strong></p>\n<ul>\n <li>Educate prisoners and the public on gardening practices</li>\n <li>Manage and track the production and sale of produce</li>\n <li>Inventory tools, seeds, produce, and equipment</li>\n <li>Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing</li>\n <li>Manage the operation of two heated greenhouses and produce gardens</li>\n <li>Serve as a resource for landscape horticulture and pond projects</li>\n <li>Work with a variety of stakeholders in various settings</li>\n</ul>\n<p> </p>\n<p><strong><u>WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS</u></strong></p>\n<p><strong> </strong></p>\n<p>This position works in the Salt Lake County Jail (which is a locked-down facility), has direct contact with prisoners, and may be exposed to stress because of human behavior in a jail environment.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>Time will be spent in the office, classroom, garden, and public settings. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.  </p>\n<p> </p>\n<p><strong><u>IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION</u></strong></p>\n<p><strong> </strong></p>\n<p>This position is required to work with prisoners at both the Salt Lake County Metro and Oxbow Jails, as well as frequently attend the Downtown Farmer’s Market.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>May be required to work nights and weekends as needed.  </p>",
