Program Description:
The START program at WellSpan Health is a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic providing integrated mental health and substance use treatment for individuals with complex needs.
The Specialized Treatment and Recovery Team (START) was launched by WellSpan Health in 2020 in South Central Pennsylvania as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), supported by a SAMHSA grant. It is designed for individuals who require immediate or complex behavioral health care that may not be addressed by conventional outpatient services.
START provides a comprehensive, integrated care experience, including:
Mental health and substance use disorder services
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for alcohol and opioid use disorders, including buprenorphine and naltrexone
Crisis mental health services and walk-in support
Individual, group, and family therapy
Primary care screening and monitoring of key health indicators
Recovery and peer support services
Care coordination and social services, including referrals for housing, job skills training, and child care access
START emphasizes a trauma-informed, patient-centered approach, ensuring that care is tailored to each individual’s needs. The program integrates behavioral health, primary care, and social support to promote recovery and overall well-being.
General Summary
Provides individual, group and/or family therapy. Provides preadmission screening to determine appropriateness for admission. Interviews patients and/or families to obtain psycho-social histories. Collaborates with the treatment team to develop a treatment plan and coordinates discharge planning.

Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
Conducts individual or group therapy sessions. Assesses patients' progress and modifies or extends treatment program accordingly. Provides therapeutic intervention with patient and family including individual, marital, parental, family and group therapies. Interviews patients and family members to obtain information about home environment, family relationships, health history, and patient's personality traits. Documents current, accurate observations of care to the patient in appropriate records. Coordinates care of assigned patients. Assists in the implementation of education and training experience for interns and other designated students. Prepares and maintains written documentation as required by the profession and the department. Common Expectations:
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s). Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required. Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops. Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.
