HEABC is responsible for negotiating provincial agreements for 190,000 unionized health care employees including nurses, physician residents, ambulance paramedics, health science professionals, and more.

OPPORTUNITY:
HEABC has an opportunity for a Legal Counsel and Negotiator in the Medical Staff Services department. Working within a collegial and service-oriented environment, you will work with a team of lawyers, negotiators and other professional staff to support and/or conduct negotiations for physician and medical staff contracts. The Legal Counsel and Negotiator provides advice and analysis on a range of legal, policy and human resources issues, and advise or represent the government or BC’s Health Authorities on disputes arising under the Physician Master Agreement, physician and medical staff contracts or related legislation.
This position is well-suited for a highly skilled lawyer interested in pursuing a non-traditional practice in a challenging and interesting segment of the public sector, who seeks more life balance than can typically be achieved in private practice, and who values the opportunity to make a positive public contribution through their work.
Required Experience & Knowledge:
You must be a member or eligible for membership to the Law Society of British Columbia or have a masters’ degree (or equivalent), in a related discipline and seven (7) to ten (10) years recent related experience in negotiating, labour relations, or health care.
Demonstrated experience negotiating complex contracts, preferably within the public sector environment.
Demonstrated ability to lead, plan, direct, manage and implement.
Exceptional communication skills both written and verbal.
Excellent conflict resolution, facilitation, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
Ability to gain trust and confidence of senior leaders internally and externally.
Expertise in research, evaluation, analysis and interpretation of legal issues.
Ability to prepare high quality legal correspondence, contracts, submissions, summaries, reports and opinions for a variety of groups.

Salary Range: $130,864 to $171,758
Typical Hiring Range: $130,864 to $163,579
In determining salary, HEABC considers many factors including the successful candidate’s skillset and experience as well as internal equity. The final salary offer will be at HEABC’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
