Description

Overview Summary Drives vacuum truck to transport various fluids to assigned locations. Inspects truck and tank to ensure safe and reliable operating condition. Loads and unloads tank according to prescribed procedures. Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Performs pre-trip, roadside and post-trip truck and tank inspections in accordance with federal and state laws, following standard company procedures. Secures vehicle to prevent unexpected movement by removing key, setting brake and blocking wheels. Reviews last inspection report and verifies completion of required maintenance and repairs. Walks around and looks under vehicle to detect damage or leaks; secured hatches, pipes, valves, hoses and cables; and placement of placards as required. Ensures tank interior, filter baghouse and cyclone separators are clean and free of substances that may react with liquids to be vacuumed or transferred. Checks engine compartment, including fluid levels, belts, hoses and wiring. Starts engine and inspects inside cab, examining operation of gauges and controls; condition of mirrors and windshield; and presence of required emergency and personal protective equipment, manifests and permits. Secures loose items in cab, documents inspection and advises Truck Pusher of necessary maintenance or repairs. Operates tank pump to load and unload brine, following standard company procedures. Positions truck, switches off engine, removes key, sets brake and blocks wheels. Dons personal protective equipment and verifies tank contents. Vents tank and connects hoses to valves. Starts pump and monitors gauges to assure accurate volume reporting, remaining receiving tank capacity, weight limit compliance, safe supply tank vacuum and safe receiving tank pressure and outage. Verifies transfer completion, switches off pump, replaces valve covers, drains and disconnects hoses, and stows gear. Drives vacuum truck on paved and unpaved roads. Applies acceleration, steering and braking techniques to compensate for high center of gravity, liquid surge and variable surface traction. Observes applicable traffic ordinances, regulations governing transportation of hazardous materials and company policies. May notify dispatcher or emergency response personnel of accidents or spills and isolate public or coworkers from hazardous exposures. Maintains U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) hours-of-service logbook and inspection records readily available for inspection by law enforcement personnel. Qualifications Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Education and/or Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED); certificate from truck driving school or equivalent. No experience required for Truck driving development program. Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Mathematical Skills Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Computer Skills To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Class A commercial driver's license with no restrictions. Valid Department of Transportation medical examiner's certificate. Hazardous Materials Endorsement and Tank Vehicle Endorsement in process. Other Skills and Abilities Ability to work in a fast paced, team environment. Good interpersonal skills. Flexibility with duties, job assignments, and work schedule. Able to read simple maps and directions. Read and write short sentences in English. Bilingual a plus. Other Qualifications Motor vehicle record (MVR) reflecting no convictions for recurring or serious violations or accidents
