Summary
St. Margaret’s School (SMS) is Western Canada’s only girl-centered, independent day and boarding school located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the unceded traditional territories of the Esquimalt Nations, Songhees Nations, and W̱SÁNEĆ Nations. Founded in 1908, SMS is an international centre for girl-centered learning and leadership development, providing empowering education for girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (boarding grades 7–12). St. Margaret’s School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) School offering the Diploma Program.
The role of the Instructional Leader is crucial in developing the ethos of achievement within a given curriculum area, in harmony with the Strategic Plan of the school. Instructional Leaders are key to the success and development of the school, and the raising of student achievement.
Instructional Leaders form a vital part of the SMS Pedagogical Leadership Team. Instructional Leaders need to have a sound knowledge of current educational trends and a desire to lead others in the implementation of excellent teaching practice. They are expected to collaborate with the Curriculum, Instruction and Design Lead and the Principals on improving pedagogy and practice where it is relevant to their curriculum area.
This position is essential for establishing a clear and consistent student leadership framework across our JK-12 school, aligning directly with the overarching Humanity strategic plan. Working in close collaboration with the Deputy Head of School, Student Life, this role will ensure the seamless integration and delivery of all student leadership initiatives. The Student Leadership Instructional Leader will oversee and further develop the Leadership Lab and the Captains Program, providing intentional pathways for student leadership growth across the SMS JK-12 experience while grounding all initiatives in the school's overarching belief in Humanity.

Student Leadership
Further Developing the Leadership Lab
Integrate student leadership curriculum and experiential learning opportunities to connect leadership directly to the 5 Cs, particularly fostering Courage (integrity and resilience) and Curiosity (critical and creative thinking).
Develop a program for students to gain real skills in areas like ethical conduct, public speaking, and strategic action through workshops and hands-on experiences within this Lab setting.
Enhance the Captains Program
Oversee and further develop the existing Captain Mentorship Program, ensuring all mentors are equipped to guide student leaders effectively in modeling ethical behavior and promoting respect.
Introduce a formal instructional coaching model for mentors and mentees, drawing from professional learning goals to embed ethics, equity, and intercultural understanding into their practice.
Work with Mentors to support and guide student leaders, helping them build Connection (authentic relationships) and demonstrate Care (empathy and global citizenship).
Develop a comprehensive resource library and ongoing training sessions for Captains and Captain Mentors to ensure they have the necessary skills and confidence to guide their mentees and lead their teams effectively.
Instructional Leader
Support colleagues in developing high-quality programming within their disciplines, including interdisciplinary and experiential learning, to promote strong student engagement
Contribute to the design and implementation of new initiatives within areas of expertise
Model effective design and implementation of learning targets, unit plans, and year plans
Collaborate with colleagues to create opportunities for enrichment and academic rigour
Facilitate professional learning communities
Attend and contribute to Curriculum Team meetings
Promote and contribute to a positive school culture
Requirements
Current and valid Teacher Certification through the Teacher Regulation Branch
Strong understanding of adolescent development, mental health, and executive functioning (required)
Experience in instructional leadership, coaching, or program coordination
Proven ability to lead professional development and collaborate across teams
Deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and student-centred learning
Background in counselling, educational psychology, or wellness education (asset but not required)
Demonstrates exemplary teaching
Demonstrates a proficient understanding of the BC curriculum
Ability and desire to lead, to organize and to collaborate with others
Excellent communication skills
Embodies a growth mindset
Experience working as part of a learning team, as well as leading change
Commitment to and evidence of continued professional growth
Maintains confidentiality and demonstrates integrity
