Staff Accountant - Transportation Tax Join Abacus! — Where Your Career is Adding Up! Abacus! is hiring! We’re an independent, full-service accounting and advisory firm providing audit, tax, accounting, and consulting services to businesses and individuals. We are seeking a Staff Accountant – Transportation Tax to join our Springfield, MO office. This role plays a key part in preparing tax filings for transportation clients, maintaining accurate financial records, and supporting tax planning initiatives. The Staff Accountant will assist with quarterly estimates, S Corporation compliance, and specialized filings including 2290 and 1099s. This position also supports client communications related to tax matters and works closely with the team to deliver accurate, timely service. Key Responsibilities Prepare quarterly tax estimates and federal filings (Forms 1099 and 2290) for transportation clients Assist with preparation of individual and business tax returns, including Schedule C and S Corporations Support clients with S Corporation formations and related compliance filings Research federal and state tax matters specific to the transportation industry Collaborate with the Transportation Tax team to ensure timely completion of client engagements Maintain accurate, organized workpapers in accordance with internal quality standards Communicate with clients to gather documentation, provide updates, and deliver completed tax work Assist with internal projects such as Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) filings, RA renewals, and client retention tracking Identify opportunities to improve processes and enhance client service Ensure compliance with internal procedures and external regulatory requirements Core Competencies Tax Preparation & Compliance: Prepares accurate tax estimates, returns, and filings for transportation clients S Corporation Knowledge: Supports entity setup, maintenance, and compliance requirements Form Filing & Deadlines: Manages timely and accurate filing of Forms 1099 and 2290 Client Communication: Communicates clearly and professionally with clients regarding tax matters Industry Knowledge: Applies federal and state tax regulations specific to transportation clients Organization & Workflow Management: Maintains structured files, tracks deadlines, and ensures timely deliverables Collaboration: Works effectively with team members to support client engagements and internal initiatives Supervisory Responsibilities No supervisory responsibilities Reports directly to the Transportation Tax Manager Work Environment & Expectations Full-time, salaried exempt position Standard business hours with flexibility Occasional extended hours (40+ per week), particularly during peak periods Location & Travel Springfield, MO (primarily office-based) Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required 1–2 years of accounting experience, preferably in tax CPA certification preferred Proficiency in Microsoft Office required Experience with QuickBooks (Desktop & Online), UltraTax, and AdvanceFlow preferred Ability to pass a CJIS background check Physical & Position Demands This position requires regular communication, close vision, and the ability to focus on detailed financial information.
