FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Grade: 8 Position Summary Performs a wide range of locksmith and electronic access system duties, including the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of all types of locks and integrated security systems, access control devices and other types of lock hardwood such as latches, door checks, and panic bars, including changing of lock combinations and making of keys. Locksmithing includes, doors, and hardware; opening of locks on doors and safes; and the changing of lock combinations; performs a full range of locksmith assignments using independent judgment to make decisions requiring the application of procedures and practices to specific work situations. Essential Job Duties • The job duties listed are typical examples of the work performed by positions in this job classification. Not all duties assigned to every position are included, nor is it expected that all positions will be assigned every duty. • Installs all types of locks and integrated security systems, access control devises and lock hardware, including panic bars, and performs the carpentry necessary for such installation. • Works directly with outsource vendors to install, maintain, and troubleshoot existing and new systems. • Installs and maintains electrical access and exit control systems. • Adjusts, maintains, repairs, and replaces door locks, padlocks, tumbler locks, combination locks, and various other lock hardware such as panic bars, door checks, latches, catches, fasteners, and door closures. • Designs grand master key systems which include: master and sub-masters and maintains records of system. • Redesigns lock cylinders. • Operates key-cutting machines. • Changes lock combinations and enters numbers of lockers and combination in an official register. • Changes lock combination using code systems and code machines. • Repairs safes and safe-locking systems. • Works with college staff in devising systems to prevent break-ins and pilferage. • Opens or removes locks which cannot be opened by ordinary means. • Safely operates hand and power tools and equipment used in the locksmithing trade. • May use a lathe, drill press, and other power tools in forming parts for locks, lock hardware, and/or safes. • May assist in preparing routine reports, material lists, estimating job costs, preparing job records, and making surveys of locksmith needs. • May provide work direction to staff assigned to perform locksmith work. • Performs related duties as assigned by the Director of Physical Plant or designee. • Repairs and opens locks and safes. • Disassembles locks such as padlocks, safe locks, and door locks, and repairs or replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts. • Changes pin lock cylinders and safe combinations. • Removes broken keys and repairs malfunctioning locks. • Maintains combination records. • Installs and repairs locks on furniture, cabinets and other items. • Fits and installs doors and related hardware. • Installs or repairs hydraulic door closers and electronic door operators using hand and power tools. • Installs, repairs, and maintains electronic access control systems, components and hardware. • Orders parts and supplies. • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor or designee. Omission of specific statement of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. Qualifications • Knowledge of the standard methods, procedures, and various types of locks and tools used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of locks, doors and hardware. • Knowledge of the latest locks, locking systems and electronic security devices. • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of locksmithing. • Skill in the use and operation of various hand and power tools. • Skill in the installation of locks, doors, and hardware. • Skill in diagnosing the cause of lock and door malfunctions. • Ability to study and comprehend new technology. • Graduation from high school or its equivalent and completion of an apprenticeship programs of at least two years duration in the locksmithing trade and one year of full-time, paid journey-level experience in the locksmithing trade • OR, Graduation from high school or its equivalent and five years of full-time, paid experience in the locksmithing trade under the supervision of a journeyman or crafts supervisor. One year of the required experience must have been at the journey-level. Licenses/Certifications • A valid Oklahoma Locksmith Technicians license is required. • A valid Oklahoma Driver’s License may be required for come positions. • Travel to location throughout the campus may be required for some positions Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Must have a strong work ethic and lead by example • Must be a professional, credible and respected representative of the institution internally and in the community • Demonstrated willingness and ability to act ethically and socially responsible • Ability to communicate in a courteous manner • Construction and repair of various types of locks, access controls and locking devices. • Electronic keys and access control devices. • Integrated security systems. • Current practices, materials, hand and power tools, and equipment used in the locksmithing trade and related trades. • Properties, adaptability, and uses of various metals, wood, and other locksmithing trade materials. • Safety and health regulations and practices pertinent to the locksmithing trade. • Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation. • Hazards and applicable SAFETY rules and precautions for heavy equipment operation. • Using the tools of the locksmithing trade, including the carpentry tools required for lock and panic bar installation • Diagnose repair needs by sound and “feel” of the movement of international parts. • Repair a variety of locks and related hardware. • Safely operation tools and machines of the locksmithing trade. • Keep accurate records. • Effectively utilize computer systems applicable to the locksmithing trade. • Learn general and specialized software applications. • Learn the characteristics of new materials and equipment and update skills to adapt to changing technology. • Understand and comply with written and oral instructions given in the English language. • Work cooperatively with other University employees and the public. • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others. • Work under hazardous conditions where physical danger exists due to mechanical equipment. • Detect necessary equipment repairs by (visually and/or aurally) perceiving malfunctions. • Communicate orally with customers, clients or the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings. • Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards. • Comprehend and make inferences from written materials such as equipment operations manuals. • Make fine, high controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of a control mechanism. • Move heavy objects (50 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet). • Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements. (Snow) • Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift. • This classification requires the use of university vehicles on university business. • Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record. The facility experiences elevated temperatures and humidity, particularly during warmer months due to limited climate control. Regular exposure to wet conditions around pool areas is expected. Supervisory Responsibility This position provides direct supervision to individual contributors and offers continuous performance feedback. The role may also involve active participation in departmental activities to meet schedules and resolve issues as needed.
