Description

Patient Care - Collect owner and patient information, including signalment and medical history Assist faculty and house officers in providing advanced veterinary care Perform patient restraint as needed Provide care for emergent, non-emergent, and healthy patients Provide care for pre-surgical and post-surgical patients Administer and monitor anesthesia of patients Under direct or written instructions of the primary clinician, oversee routine patient care performed by veterinary students Under direct or written instructions of the primary clinician, perform routine patient care on patients when veterinary students are unavailable Recognize and respond appropriately to emergency or critical care situations Collect, store and process diagnostic samples Record information in medical records including SOAP information, vital parameters, test results, discharge instructions, and client communication as needed Monitor hospital orders and treatment orders to ensure completion and compliance, informing clinicians as needed Assist with zoo animal institutional transfers, including communication with transfer facilities, contract sites, and state veterinarians for all requirements prior to transfer Assist with animal examinations, complete diagnostics, administer drugs/treatments, and monitor anesthesia under veterinary direction Coordinates service schedule, receives and discharges patients Draws blood, prepares for and assists with diagnostic procedures, provides medical care for hospitalized patients, including checking vital signs, cleaning wounds, changing bandages, monitoring incisions, placing catheters, administering medications and treatments as directed, monitoring intake and output levels, and exercising patients Coordinates operating room turnaround as directed or in accordance with surgical schedules, prepares patients with aseptic technique using knowledge of anatomy and surgical procedures. Assists clinicians/students with procedures in the surgical suites Submits patient requests and completes digital acquisition of requests. Performs standard procedures per established protocol and techniques including presenting and/or positioning patient for study Submits charges for relevant medical testing and procedures Facilities and Service Maintenance - Clean, stock, and maintain clinical areas Maintain necessary clinical supplies Maintain sanitary clinical conditions Coordinate with zoo staff and animal caretakers to address routine and non-routine animal housing needs Operate, clean, and maintain clinical equipment, including specialized equipment, such as anesthesia machine, radiology equipment, remote drug delivery equipment Manage vehicle (place carpool requests as needed, refill gas, address vehicle concerns, report mileage for long term rentals) Compile and report case log and visit data to maintain COE to appropriate Anticipate service/staff supply needs for remote site procedures and ensure appropriate supplies/equipment are obtained and ready prior to transport, including charging battery operated equipment, packing the ambulatory tote, cleaning, and restocking regularly used equipment. Schedule and coordinate procedures/supplies with other departments as necessary Comply with federal regulations and university and hospital polices regarding the use and handling of controlled substances. Securely maintain all controlled substances when traveling off site and ensure regular audits with the VTH Medication Dispensary occur Drive University vehicle to off-site facilities; engage in safe driving practices Provides client and/or referring veterinarians with information about section/service area procedures and the cost of services Assists with hospital off-site facility inventory and maintenance, including cleaning and disinfecting cabinets, carts, counters, sinks and patient cages/stalls as necessary Orders replacement supplies, drugs and as needed equipment for service under direction of veterinarian Scholarly Activity - Clinical Teaching, Research Orient, direct, and instruct students, interns, and residents Assist faculty and interns in course coordination and preparation Assist in grading students Assist in clinical research Lead modular training exercises for veterinary students on clinical rotation Assist in training exercises lead by faculty and house officers Assist in preparation and presentation of training laboratories Complete necessary forms and training necessary for participation in IACUC protocols Assist with developing and conducting student/staff orientation Assist the section/service head in developing standard operating procedures within the specialty section/service area Perform other duties as assigned and as needed
