Position Summary
The Automation Engineer designs, develops, implements, and maintains automated control systems to improve efficiency, safety, quality, and reliability of manufacturing or process operations. This role works closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to optimize automated systems and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Job Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager – Concentrator or Pellet Plant, the Automation Engineer will be responsible for the following:
Design, program, test, and troubleshoot automation and control systems Develop and maintain PLC, DCS, HMI, and SCADA applications Support commissioning, startup, and optimization of automated equipment and processes Diagnose and resolve control system failures to minimize downtime Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve system performance and reliability Develop and maintain control system documentation, standards, and best practices Implement process improvements using automation and data-driven solutions Ensure systems comply with safety, quality, and regulatory requirements Train operations and maintenance personnel on automated systems Support cybersecurity and backup strategies for control systems Skills and Qualifications
3+ years of experience in industrial automation or controls engineering (adjustable by level) Hands-on experience with PLC/DCS platforms (Honeywell, Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider, Mitsubishi, etc.) Experience with HMI/SCADA systems Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, Profibus, etc.) Strong troubleshooting skills for electrical and control systems Education
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Controls, Automation, Mechatronics, or related field) preferred, or technical degree with relevant work experience Physical Requirements
This position is a mixture of field work and office duties. Field work will be conducted daily throughout the year so exposure to the elements (rain, snow, cold, heat, etc) is to be expected. The office duties will require work in front of a laptop, desk, and phone. Some lifting and strength required when working in mill. Salary Range : $110,000 - $135,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. Benefits : Health Insurance : Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with an HSA option. Retirement Plan : 401(k) with 6% company match. LTD, & Life Insurance : Coverage provided by Mesabi Metallics. Paid Time Off (PTO) : 0-5 Years: 120 hours per year.
5-10 Years: 160 hours per year.
10+ Years: 200 hours per year.
Plus 11 paid holidays.
