Description

Description The Racing Veterinarian is responsible from providing veterinarian care to horses on site and keep officials informed as to condition and racing worthiness of the horses. Be present in the paddock on the race track during the post parade and at the starting gate until the horses are dispatched from the gate for the race. Inspect any horse when there is a question as the physical condition of such horse. Recommend scratching a horse to the judges if the horse in physically incapable of exerting its best effort to win. Inspect any horse which appears in physical distress during the race or at the finish of the race and report such horse to the judges and the official veterinarian. Refrain from directly treating or prescribing for any horse scheduled to participate at any recognized meeting except in cases of emergency, accident, or injury. Humanely destroy any horse deem to be so seriously injured that it is in the best interest of racing to so act. Place horses on the bleeder list. Will abide by all safety requirements as outlined in the Safety Manual or as required by individual departments and/or job functions. All other duties assigned by management. Qualifications Must have a Veterinarian degree. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Must be able to obtain an Indiana Horse Racing License.
