Description
Overview
Lay out, fit, and fabricate metal components to make and assemble structural forms, such as machinery frames, bridge parts, and pressure vessels, using knowledge of machining and welding techniques, metallurgy, and engineering requirements. Includes prototype work, welding and analyzing engineering drawings and specifications to plan welding operations. To perform journeyman level welding, machining, and fabrication of metals and special alloys to maintain, repair, design, and modify rides, vehicles and construction related items; and to construct specialized devices, parts and structures as requested.
Salary Details: $28.64 / hr - $37.24 / hr
Responsibilities
Machinist duties include setting up and operating conventional, special-purpose and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers. Fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts and fitting/assembling machined parts into complete projects, parts or units. Applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques: Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. Measures, marks, and scribes’ dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines, such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers. Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media. Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required. Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications, using precision measuring instruments. Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data. Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools, and power tools. Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly, using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks. May install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
Welding duties include setting up and operating acetylene and/or electric arc welding equipment to weld metal parts, according to work order, blueprints, layout, and operating charts. Clamping work pieces into position at work area in field or fixed job site. Selecting welding equipment, torch tip, filler wire, and flux, according to charts or thickness and type of metal used. Connecting hoses from torch to regulator valves and cylinders of oxygen and fuel gas or adjusting controls/voltage on electric arc welding as required. Turning regulator valves to start flow of gases, lights torch and adjusts gas mixture and pressure to obtain flame of desired size and color. Starting machines, observing welding action, and examines weld for defects. Visually examines welds for adherence to specifications. May grind welded surfaces for penetrating test. Adjusts machine setup to vary bead size and other weld characteristics, as job requires. May record setup and operating data. May re-weld defective joint as non-destructive test dictates. May lay out, fit, and tack-weld work pieces together. May remove surplus flux, slag, and splatter, using wire brush, portable grinder, and hand scraper.
Responsible for using Stick, Mig, Tig, and Flux Core welding techniques to weld various components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions. Performing any combination of duties to assist workers in welding, brazing, and thermal and arc cutting activities.
Maintains cleanliness and safety in assigned work area and performs all duties in compliance with Six Flags Safety guidelines and requirements and reports all unsafe or unusual conditions to supervision.
Qualifications
Requires a minimum of 4–6 years of experience in machining and welding operations, along with a current AWS D1.1 Certified Welder certification.
Possess strong knowledge of machinist and welding trade practices, including the properties and applications of various metals and alloys, and be proficient in selecting proper welding techniques for different materials and structural requirements.
Prior experience operating and maintaining machine tools, metal-forming and metal-removal equipment, and various welding devices to fabricate, fit, assemble, repair, and maintain parts and equipment used in a theme park environment.
Must be able to determine proper welding techniques for various alloys; operating and maintaining metal-removing machines, metal forming equipment, machine tools and a variety of welding devices.
Lay out, fit, and fabricate metal components to assemble structural forms, such as machinery frames, bridge parts, and pressure vessels, using knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, and engineering requirements. Includes analyzing engineering drawings and specifications to plan welding operations where procedural information is required or unavailable.
Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine dimensions, tolerances, layouts, and work sequences, and perform layout, fitting, and fabrication of metal components such as ride structures, mechanical assemblies, and support systems. This position requires applying knowledge of machine shop theory, shop mathematics, metallurgy, and fabrication techniques to safely execute work, often planning tasks independently when detailed instructions are not available.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and effectively communicate in English to follow procedures, complete documentation, and coordinate with team members is essential, with a strong emphasis on safety, precision, and maintaining equipment critical to guest operations.
