Description

Position: Bay Circuit Trail Project Coordinator Location: Boston, MA Reports To: Reports to the Director of Southern New England Conservation Projects and Partnerships Start and End Date: February 2, 2022 – November 30, 2022 Details: This position is a seasonal position that requires full-time 40 hour weeks. Salary: $20/Hour Summary Description: The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) seeks to fill an opening for a Bay Circuit Trail Project Coordinator in Boston, MA. The Bay Circuit Trail and Greenway (BCT) is a 230+ mile close-to-home, multi-use trail in Greater Boston, stretching from Plum Island to Duxbury/Kingston Bay. Since 2012 the Since 2012 the AMC overseen the BCT working towards the completion, enhancement, and long-term protection of this recreational trail and greenway. The BCT has seen a marked increase in use, especially during the pandemic, as such we seek to ensure that the trail is well-marked, maintained, and accessible to all. The Project Coordinator will develop a structure for protection and stewardship of the BCT working with trail maintaining clubs, municipalities, and individuals to maintain, enhance and promote the trail. The Project Coordinator should have a fundamental understanding of basic trail maintenance and be familiar with Leave No Trace principles to serve as a trail resource for local organizations in developing new trail projects or trail maintenance programs, and to represent the AMC within the regional trails’ community. In addition to the BCT, this individual will continue to grow our partnerships in Eastern Massachusetts. What you’ll be doing: Develop a structure for protection and stewardship of the Bay Circuit Trail Inventory trail uses allowed on lands along the trail, including biking Build a new Bay Circuit Trail Committee, comprised of a range of partners, that supports all BCT maintainers including municipal trail committees, BCT trail maintaining clubs and individual maintainers Support AMC and BCT trail volunteers through project management and fundraising for their individual sections of the trail Host trail trainings for BCT trail maintainers Maintain an ongoing list of trail projects/needs along the trail Work with municipalities and trail maintaining groups to install signage regarding biking and other uses along the trail Work with the AMC grants team to secure financial support from foundations, corporations, and donors for trail projects Collaborate with the AMC Trails Department on trail projects along the BCT for AMC Custom Crews, BCT Youth Crew, AMC AmeriCorps, and AMC Professional Crews Make annual spring updates of the BCT map, trail descriptions and interactive map Increase awareness of the trail through the BCT website and social media Collaborate with AMC staff overseeing close-to-home trails What we’re looking for: A variety of backgrounds and experiences may be considered, including trail planning or management, natural resource or recreation management, project management, community organizing, or a related field, with at least two years of experience. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to build and sustain collaborative partnerships, especially with diverse constituents such as volunteers, land and trail managers, and public officials. Facilitation skills and experience in organizing meetings and events for productive results. Flexible team player with an ability to also work independently with an attention to detail. Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems and digital mapping platforms. Comfort using web-based communications tools, including social media. Willingness to travel throughout Eastern Massachusetts with some evenings and weekends. Knowledge of Eastern Massachusetts geography and communities preferred. Physical Abilities Required: Most work is performed in a standard office setting. Must be able to stand, sit, walk, lift-up to 20 pounds from floor to waist height, and operate standard office equipment. Must be able to travel independently and safely in all weather conditions on the hiking trails of the Eastern Massachusetts carrying up to 25-pounds in a backpack.
