JOB SUMMARY
The Rehabilitative Services Aide, the H_A II, reports to the therapists of a particular service and provides both direct and indirect patient care services. At this level, the employee is responsible for the treatment of patients who require the direct supervision and daily guidance of an occupational, physical and/or speech therapist. The Rehabilitative Aide works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, although pediatric and adolescent patients may also be treated. The Rehabilitative Aide actively participates in departmental and organizational programs, including performance improvement activities, inservices and staff development activities.

DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
I. PATIENT CARE RESPONSIBILITIES Percentage of Time Spent 50%
A. Treats patients under the direct supervision of an occupational, physical and/or speech therapist.
B. Assists the occupational, physical and/or speech therapist with patient care activities.
C. Assists the therapist with discharge planning.
D. Plans, coordinates and distributes patient schedules.
E. Responsible for the transport of patients to and from therapy.
F. Prepares, maintains and transmits accurate patient care records as required including services rendered and progress notes.
G. Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, families, department staff, managers and other hospital personnel.
H. Demonstrates effective time management skills in all aspects of position including patient care activities and clerical duties within a standard working day.
II. FACILITY MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES Percentage of Time Spent 25%
A. Responsible for the maintenance of equipment including stocking and tracking of equipment.
B. Assists with clerical duties.
C. Assists with reception duties.
III. EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Percentage of Time Spent 15%
A. Participates in staff inservice education program, staff, discipline and area meetings.
B. Participates in orientation and training of new staff.
C. May seek appropriate opportunities for ongoing education.
IV. DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES Percentage of Time Spent 10%
A. Participates in department performance improvement activities.
B. Contributes to the goals of the department by participating in special projects, committees, etc.
C. Represents the department as a professional through behaviors exhibited in communication, organization, accountability, responsibility and integrity.

Performs other duties as assigned or instructed.
Work Environment
Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture. Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility. Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows. Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments. Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATION
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED
1. Possession of a high school diploma.
2. Prior patient care experience in inpatient and/or outpatient rehab or related setting or volunteer experience in rehab or related setting.
3. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
4. Ability to recognize signs of physiological distress.
5. Possession of current CPR certification.
6. Proficient in computer skills including Word, Excel, and on line communication.
7. Possession of good interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills.
8. This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
PREFERRED
1. Prior patient care experience in an acute care rehab setting.
2. Prior experience working with an interdisciplinary health provider team.
3. Prior experience working in an academic medical center environment.
4. Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
5. Knowledge of rehab equipment.

Demonstrated ability to provide appropriate care based on the needs of a specific individual, including the patient’s age. When the rehab aide is primarily working with patients of age groups other than adult and/or geriatric, additional age-specific performance criteria for neonate, pediatric, and adolescent populations are delineated under the pediatric clinical services mentoring program.
