Description
La Jolla Country Day School is seeking a dynamic, student-centered, and conceptually driven History Educator for a Long-Term Substitute assignment beginning in August 2026 through the end of January 2027.
This position includes teaching two sections of 7th grade and two sections of 8th grade United States history, serving as an advisor, and chaperoning the week-long 7th grade outdoor education trip to Catalina in November.

What You’ll Do
Teaching & Learning Teach two sections of 7th grade and two sections of 8th grade United States history Collaborate with the history department to plan and prepare engaging instructional materials and assessments that promote historical inquiry and critical thinking Deliver student-centered instruction grounded in discussion, analysis, and real-world connections Foster skills in historical reasoning, source analysis, and written and verbal communication Create a supportive classroom culture that encourages curiosity, respectful dialogue, and collaboration Curriculum & Department Collaboration Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum implementation, pedagogy, and assessment practices Use student data to inform instruction and support student growth Participate in departmental and cross-divisional conversations as appropriate Engage in reflection and professional growth during the duration of the assignment Student & Family Partnership Communicate regularly and effectively with parents/guardians through conferences, reports, and ongoing dialogue Support students’ academic development, organization, and confidence as learners Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and families Community Engagement & School Life Participate in faculty meetings and school-wide events as appropriate Serve as a chaperone on the week-long 7th grade outdoor education trip to Catalina in November Contribute positively to the professional and communal life of the school Who You Are

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree (or equivalent) preferred in history, education, or a related field Experience teaching middle school history (Grades 7–8 or equivalent) preferred Understanding of adolescent development and middle school pedagogy Professional Skills and Experience
Ability to create engaging, discussion-based, and student-centered history lessons Experience with or willingness to integrate technology into instruction Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackbaud) Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills Flexibility, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset Commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom environment Work Environment & Schedule
Full-time, in-person, campus-based role Typical classroom and school environment with occasional variability during events Role requires regular standing, walking, and movement around campus Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and work at a computer for extended periods Compensation
This is a long-term substitute position from August 2026 through the end of January 2027. The biweekly salary offer to a successful candidate will depend on factors including experience, education, training, and relevant skills, and fall in the range of $2,500-$3,400.
