We’re revolutionizing energy storage with cost-effective, multi-day technology designed to keep the electric grid secure and reliable, even during extended periods of stress. By strengthening the electric system and reimagining what’s possible, we’re giving clean energy a whole new form! In recent years, Form Energy has earned a number of accolades, including being named by TIME as a “Best Invention”, MIT Technology Review as a “Top Climate Tech Company To Watch”, and Fast Company as “One of the Next Big Things In Tech”. We are making rapid progress on our mission of delivering energy storage for a better world, and our team is growing just as rapidly to meet demand. We have signed contracts with leading electric utilities across the United States and production of our iron-air batteries is underway at our first high-volume manufacturing facility in West Virginia. Working for Form Energy is more than just a job, it’s a chance to be part of something extraordinary. And now - right as we significantly scale up battery manufacturing -  might be the most exciting moment in the company’s history to join. We are assembling a team of highly talented and driven individuals across the country. Driven by our core values of humanity, excellence, and creativity, our team is determined to deliver on our mission and transform the energy landscape for the better. Feeling energized to make a meaningful impact on the world? Then keep reading - you’ve come to the right place. Role Description The Cell Engineering team within the Product Engineering group at Form is multidisciplinary and focused on delivering qualified battery cell designs that meet operational performance targets, at cost and with high reliability, from controlled processes on high-volume manufacturing lines for Form Energy's utility-scale multi-day energy storage system. We are looking for an experienced mechanical systems engineer with expertise in product mechanical architecture, cell systems engineering practices to join our Cell Engineering Design team in Berkeley, CA. In this senior engineering position, you will be responsible for defining and implementing processes for the development of technical requirements and interface definitions used to inform mechanical, electrical, and control system designs that influence the cell design and performance. You must bring a deep knowledge of systems thinking and a collaborative approach with other engineering groups and managers throughout the Product Engineering and Core Technology teams. This will be a part of your daily workflow, as this role will include a blend of technical development and cross-team coordination. In addition to augmenting the core mechanical design engineers, you will be providing the design a systems approach including coordinating requirements, DFMEA, interface definitions, issue resolution, electrical sensing and control system definition such that the cell sub-system integrates to the overall functional execution of the Energy Storage System being delivered at Form Energy. Own analysis, prototyping, and failure analysis efforts for identified cell sub-system and interfacing components. Fabricate prototypes for mechanical verification testing. Conduct validation testing to prove that designs and interfacing systems meet critical requirements. Negotiate interface requirements with the Product Architecture, Battery Electrode, Module and Pack Mechanical and Electrical teams. Support trade-studies to inform product architecture decisions; facilitate alignment between stakeholders throughout the Engineering and Core Technology Team. Develop and maintain cell architecture concepts at both system and subsystem levels, spanning product generations and field deployments. Leverage updated component and system performance data to guide iterative architecture evolution. Work in the team that establishes functional requirements, interface definitions, and controls concept of operations for each subsystem including EE interfaces and mechanisms that make the cell sub-system functionally and operationally safe. Verify performance and cell based attributes in conjunction with Product Attribute Lead engineer supporting the Control Systems team in developing and updating cell representative models with empirical data where required. Coordinate with internal teams on failure analysis via DFMEAs, verification and validation test plans, certifications, and product deployment processes (factory and field). What you'll bring: 6+ years industrial experience in systems engineering; direct experience with grid-interactive energy storage systems is a plus. BSc or greater in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or similar. Track record of tactical decision making, and strategic planning. Deep knowledge of mechanical systems engineering practices including the use of frameworks for requirements development and architecture definition. Strong experience with systems engineering principles and Failure Mode management. Proficiency in one or more requirements management tools (Jama, Polarion, or similar).
