Description

JOB SUMMARY The Patient Access Specialist is a position with diverse responsibilities associated with the referral and seamless transition of patients and clients to all agency services and programs. It requires excellent interpersonal and customer service skills via telephonic communications, knowledge of basic medical terminology and ICD-10 coding. Must possess exceptional attention to detail and data entry skills. Staff in this position must also possess critical thinking, problem solving and multi-tasking skills as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues. PRIMARY JOB DUTIES 1. Serves as the primary contact for referrals to all agency programs and services primarily via telephone. 2. Collects and enters basic information to open new referrals to facilitate the admission process. 3. Completes new patient referral and admission required documentation and processes 4. Follows protocols to route patients needing in-depth review to the Patient Access Coordinator 5. Communicates with patients and/or family members in a professional and caring manner. 6. Provides pertinent information to help ensure understanding of agency programs. 7. Appropriately documents and communicates all required information in accordance with agency policies and procedures, accreditation, regulation, and legal requirements. 8. Organizes and performs work effectively and efficiently. 9. Maintains and adjusts schedule to enhance team performance. 10. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with all members of the team. 11. Maintains and promotes customer satisfaction. 12. Effectively demonstrates the mission, vision, and values of organization daily. JOB SPECIFICATIONS 1. Education: Associates Degree or higher or 5 years of experience in lieu of Associate Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. 2. Experience: Minimum of one year experience in health-related field. ICD-10 coding knowledge preferred 3. Essential Technical / Motor Skills: Ability to read, write, and speak English. Have a working knowledge of clinical and direct patient care processes. Good hand-eye coordination to operate computer terminal. 4. Interpersonal Skills: Literate in the English language. Articulate and easily understood by patients, family, and colleagues. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to quickly develop positive interactions with team members, clients, and the public. Highly self-motivated and self-disciplined, positive attitude. Collaborative, with the ability to interact with other staff in a positive and professional manner. 5. Essential Physical Requirements: Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and bend/twist/pull/lift/ambulate. 6. Essential Mental Abilities: Ability to apply judgment and reasoning to prioritize work, make appropriate decisions, and understand, follow, and recall verbal and written instructions. 7. Essential Sensory Requirements: Ability to use visual and auditory senses and verbally communicate. 8. Exposure to Hazards: Reasonably anticipated occupational exposure. May have exposure to blood and body fluids, infectious diseases, needle puncture wounds. May encounter patients and other situations that present a potential threat to personal safety. May encounter temperature changes and weather extremes. 9. Other - Hours of Work: Flexible schedule to accommodate staffing needs, which may include weekends and holidays 10. Population Served: Organization service area, internal and external.
