The Highlights:
The Academic Advisor will advise an assigned caseload of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels from the point of inquiry through graduation and/or licensure This process of advising includes quarterly academic advising, informing students of institutional, program, and licensure requirements, maintaining student records, documenting student contact, communication with students in both written and oral forms, and in general responding to the immediate and long-term academic needs of students. Must be able to establish and maintain ongoing positive working relationships with all COE faculty, department chairs, staff, and students. The Academic Advisor will be assigned certain focused student advising tasks, but will also be expected to respond to a wide variety of projects and needs as they may arise in the College of Education.
What You'll Do:
Provide academic advising and administrative services to Education students on institutional, program, and state requirements including curriculum review, licensure requirements, policies and procedures, and referrals as appropriate.
Meet with students on a regular basis and monitor their progress.
Refer students to other supports and services around the university
Update student records, including test entry, major changes, advisor updates, etc.
Provide timely communications to students
Authorized to manage course waitlist evaluation and registration
Review and approve course substitutions and facilitate prerequisite approval requests
Contact faculty regarding students or curriculum issues as necessary
Provide support in retention and recruiting efforts as requested by Assistant Dean for Advising, Licensure & Student Affairs
Assist with routine monitoring of students in completion of programs
Conduct audit of student records in preparation for student teaching, practicum, internship, and degree conferral for individual caseload of students
Communicate results of audit to students and college offices
Provide information to students regarding graduation and degree conferral
Maintain records on behalf of students for accuracy of program, licensure, and graduation goals
Maintain accurate records on behalf of students for
Update student records, including test entry, major changes, advisor updates, etc.
Assist students in navigating various forms and required documents for late adds, course articulation, pass/fail, independent study, etc.
Assist with services related to new student advising including orientations.
Conduct individual appointments with incoming undergraduate students and graduate students
Routinely give presentations to new students and guests during summer orientations
Outreach to new graduate students via email
Participate in graduate orientations, prospective student events, and recruitment activities
Participate in discussions on improvements and enhancements to improve outreach, activities, and presentations
Participation in meetings/events held by the College of Education, the University, and external meeting events as articulated by the Assistant Dean for Advising, Licensure & Student Affairs and special projects as assigned.
What You'll Need:
Bachelors degree or equivalent experience required; Masters Degree in student affairs, higher education administration, counseling or education preferred.
Three or more years experience in higher education and academic advising
Capacity to work well in an urban academic community
Proven experience working with culturally diverse populations
Knowledge of teacher licensure process, state program, and state program approval regulations, and teacher preparation programs
Knowledge of Illinois State Board of Education licensure requirements
Knowledge of graduate and undergraduate program requirements
Knowledge of the best practices in the field of Academic Advising
Demonstrated competency in using technology utilized by DePaul University and the College of Education.
Excellent communication skills: oral, written, listening; excellent organization skills
Proven experience in managing multiple projects and tasks
Ability to function in a fast-paced, diverse environment with numerous interruptions
Demonstrated workplace professionalism and the ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability to work well with students, faculty, and other staff, in both a team and individual setting
Ability to write letters, handbooks and other forms of informational materials
The anticipated hiring range for this position is: $42,679 to $51,937.96.
The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
