Description
The Intermediate School Science Teacher vacancy is a full-time position reporting directly to the division head. Potomac is looking to fill this vacancy starting with the 2026-27 academic year. This position is responsible for teaching Science curriculum to students in grades 7-8, as well as advising a group of Intermediate School students.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Manage a course load including four classes and an advisory.
Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instruction in a manner that facilitates active, student-centered learning using various teaching methods.
Teach using a variety of resources while emphasizing an inquiry-based approach that allows the students to discover and develop their talent as scientists as they investigate the natural world.
Work with students to encourage and facilitate each individual’s growth.
Collaborate actively with science department colleagues, including on curriculum and course planning.
Teach the assigned curriculum, evaluate students’ progress, and inform parents of progress.
Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities by integrating competencies and goals into the lesson plans.
Keep attendance records; manage student behavior in the classroom and maintain a positive educational environment for all students.
Meet with parents as needed to discuss student progress and challenges.
Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and other teacher training workshops.
Demonstrate personal leadership qualities to inspire student learning, including understanding of the characteristics of the age group taught.
Work in an organized, dependable, patient, and creative manner.
Advise a group of Intermediate School students by developing meaningful relationships with them and supporting their academic and social-emotional growth.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Job Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree required.
A minimum of two years’ experience teaching science, preferably at the Middle School level.
Skilled in writing and preparing lesson plans.
Ability to communicate, motivate students and understand the students’ educational and emotional needs.
Ability to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences in students and utilize different teaching methods that will result in higher student achievement.
Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with other teachers, support staff, parents and members of the community.
